not sure where this thread belongs but, i basically am looking for some hardcore'ish security software. i use pretty pedestrian stuff and am looking to protect my work with something more robust.

ah beat me to it, i was just gonna post this question (thank you search button!)
i am looking for something better that what i have for an av/anti-malware etc because i've seen my av mysteriously shut down on it's own a couple times and am concerned i'm already infected, although researching tech forums this is the best recommended i could find so far and what i currently use:
av: nod32 (not the security suite)
firewall: comodo (free)
keylogger: keyscrambler (free)
malware: spybot s&d (free) and spyware blaster (free)
auto updater: secunia psi
also i've just discovered bleepingcomputer and it seems to be a highly recommended forum with a boatload of resources. still reading up.
I like hitman, hijackthis, ccleaner, maleware bytes, super anti spy and norton...pretty much does the trick...I have heard that kapersky is good, never tried it...
