Hi everyone,

As a beginner, I want to avoid wasting time or making avoidable mistakes.

From your experience, what are the biggest mistakes newbies usually make when starting out in online marketing?

Any lessons learned would be really helpful.

Thanks.

Honesty requires that you understand one tactic thoroughly before moving on to another, so don't rush into things or try to master too many techniques at once. In addition, newcomers waste the greatest time and resources when they disregard fundamentals like consistency, monitoring outcomes, and comprehending their target demographic.

Newbies' biggest mistakes are trying to master every platform at once and giving up after 2 weeks without results; instead, pick one traffic source (like Pinterest or SEO), stick to it for 3 months, and double down on what shows even minor traction instead of constantly switching strategies.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket, spread it over different methods you like & think will work

Lack of consistency probably is the bigger issue but following all gurus is also bad. You need to inspire from them and create something new/usefull

Every mistake is a lesson learned, the real mistake is not learning from it and repeating it.

Newbies often chase trends, skip audience research ignore testing and expect instant results. Learn the basics, test small, be consistent.

Have a well-defined goal and a clear strategy to earn money instead of chasing all that glitters.

It takes time, so have patience.

You'll have some bottlenecks, so be prepared to solve problems.

You'll fail multiple times, so keep moving forward and don't give up.

You'll be scammed, so take precautions.

1. Unrealistic expectations
Online marketing is still a business. And like any business, most people fail. Same thing applies here. Most “internet marketers” either make very little or nothing at all.

2. No real skills
Everyone and their dog is an online marketer, crypto investor, dropshipper, etc. Most people don’t have actual skills. No creativity, no consistency, no discipline, no patience.

3. The risk/reward math doesn’t make sense
If you don’t have a realistic plan to make at least 10x what you’d earn in a normal 9–5, it’s probably not worth the stress.
Even with a solid plan, you might still fail but chasing a 10x outcome makes the risk reasonable.

4. Believing in “get rich quick” and guru BS
A huge chunk of the IM space is just people selling courses on how to sell courses. “Secret systems,” “proven methods,” magic shortcuts.... none of that builds real wealth. If it sounds easy, it’s probably designed to take your money, not make you rich.

Real money is at the intersection of actual business skills and internet marketing. If you can be both - a technical founder and a marketer - you can build the product and sell it yourself. That’s how you actually win.

Make mistakes they help you learn the right path. But before that, stick to your plan, study your competitors, and use that knowledge to build a strong foundation. Once the basics are solid, introducing your own ideas will take everything to the next level.

From what I’ve seen, most beginners fail because they try too many things at once, expect quick results, or don’t take time to learn the basics. Focusing on one method, testing patiently, and tracking what works usually saves a lot of time and money.

Expecting fast results with zero testing budget.
Online marketing usually requires time, data, and some trial and error.

Stay active and keep learning. IM changes every day and you need to keep updated with the changes. This could be Google algorithms, coding languages/practices, social media platforms, tweaks to your chosen method etc. Always account for variable change.

Don't work hard, work smart

Don t follow shiny things and empty promises, make a plan and follow it.

Jumping in without understanding who you’re actually selling to is the fastest way to waste time. Small experiments and steady learning beat chasing every shiny tactic.

Don't chase "passive income" gurus. Build real skills and a genuine audience first. Patience is key.

Learn basic strategy (something like Kotler) → pick ONE hard skill → execute → refine strategy based on reality
