From your experience, what are the biggest mistakes newbies usually make when starting out in online marketing?
1. Unrealistic expectations
Online marketing is still a business. And like any business, most people fail. Same thing applies here. Most “internet marketers” either make very little or nothing at all.
2. No real skills
Everyone and their dog is an online marketer, crypto investor, dropshipper, etc. Most people don’t have actual skills. No creativity, no consistency, no discipline, no patience.
3. The risk/reward math doesn’t make sense
If you don’t have a realistic plan to make at least 10x what you’d earn in a normal 9–5, it’s probably not worth the stress.
Even with a solid plan, you might still fail but chasing a 10x outcome makes the risk reasonable.
4. Believing in “get rich quick” and guru BS
A huge chunk of the IM space is just people selling courses on how to sell courses. “Secret systems,” “proven methods,” magic shortcuts.... none of that builds real wealth. If it sounds easy, it’s probably designed to take your money, not make you rich.
Real money is at the intersection of actual business skills and internet marketing. If you can be both - a technical founder and a marketer - you can build the product and sell it yourself. That’s how you actually win.
