Please be aware that Google isn't the only local player in the universe. Yelp, Yahoo, Bing, etc. There are tons of local search engines out there and they could have a similar program. You're gonna have to do the heavy lifting and research it. :p

Yes thats true. The idea of the program is to expand street view to businesses. So essentially you can navigate around in street view, then select a business and walk into the store virtually. Then you can see the inside of the bussiness, what they offer ect. So the photographers would take pictures inside these stores to create the virtual experience.

Its funny this came up here. Being an ex photographer himself, He literally flys around the country talking to photography groups about signing up for this program. So far I believe google is the only one doing this and it's a new program for them.

He seems to be very excited about it. Glad to see that others have a general interest in something like this as well
 
I hope this expands into Canada soon. I would love to be able to help out in Canada :)

Not true. In fact, the Google Business Photos program is available in:

Ireland
Denmark
France
Netherlands

Sweden
United Kingdom

AU/NZ:
Australia
New Zealand

Japan as well, but I don't have the link handy (edit: forum won't let me post links, sorry).
 
No other company that I know of has a program comparable to Streetview and, by extension, Google Business Photos. There are great open source projects for actual street maps (OpenStreetMaps) comes to mind, but the investment in producing a feature like StreetView is enormous. If a 3rd party had it, Apple probably would have bought it so they could compete with their new maps app ;-)
 
Hey all, I am in fact Josh's Googler friend. I am the Outreach Coordinator for the Google Business Photos project. I'll be answering your questions for the next few minutes.
 
We are in Canada. In fact I'm traveling there for the first time (Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto) over the course of September. PM me and I'll make sure you get invited to one of our workshops.
 
The Trusted Photographer program is a training and certification program. Google trains and certifies a photographer (for free) to be able to produce these images using our proprietary back end software which composites, stitches, and anonymizes the 360 degree panoramas. The pay depends on the price a photographer can get for this product in their local market, and prices can vary substantially. Each business shoot/process/publish takes about 1-3 hours, and we've seen prices range from about $200 to over $1000 per business depending on the business vertical, the salesmanship and portfolio of the photographer, the geographical market it's in, etc.
 
I'm going to be giving online workshops for anybody interested in the next couple of weeks. Once I put together a sign up form (today or tomorrow) I'll post the link here. Actually, I won't post the link because I'm a newb and am not allowed, but PM me and I'll get it to you.
