Basic SEO question

First site? Low competition keyword? Just do it.

It isn't a matter of how many searches a terms gets per month but rather the ROI per visitor (300 "buy beach house" visitors > 15000 "free funny pictures" visitors)

Haha, never said it was low-competition in fact, it's classed as high competition by google. Is there a certain amount of global monthly searches which is a good base to go off of though? I can't imagine this keyword, with < 10 monthly searches would do

30k phrase match results is low competition.

Assuming $.10 income per visitor:
Main keyword: 5k+ exact local searches
2nd tier keywords (make subpages targetting them): 2k+ exact local searches

If you are referring to the "Competition" column in google's keyword tool, it is the adword competition, meaning that if the competition is high, there is more advertisers for it (meaning more money potential via adsense) BUT it also generally means more competitors for you website... but it is not always the case.

Thank you both, I've been basing it off of the adwords tool, I've always wondered if that was a good or bad indicator and it looks like it's a bad one! Should I simply ignore the amount of global monthly searches for the keyphrase on Google's adwords tool and base it off of the phrase search results then? Thanks again, sorry for such simple questions

Hi Guys I need some help with the Japanese language keywords and the Japanese website promotion.
The 7 keywords are as follows
占い　　　占い師　　　魔術　　　白魔術　　　復縁　　　有名占い師　　　　　　　当たる占い

I need to be no1 in Google Japan and Yahoo japan ranking tell me how and what can be done.

Ok, I think you are missing the point they were making. Just because adwords says it high competition, does not mean there is high "SEO" competition. This just means that a lot of advertisers are bidding on that keyword.

When you put your keyword in quotes, the number of sites returned by G is not really that important. It gives a good initial idea, but you really need to dig deeper to find out the level of competition. i.e. number of backlinks, page rank, anchor text used, etc..

The global monthly searches and how many results are returned with your keyword in quotes are not the same thing. GMS is how many people around the globe type that phrase into G. Make sure you tick the "exact match" box in adwords tool to see how many people type the exact phrase in.

Remember, the adwords tool was created for advertisers, not SEO guys, so you really need to pay attention to the data.

So high competition could be a good indicator of a highly valued keyword? If advertisers are willing to compete heavily for the keyword, it would be a sign of a keyword with a strong amount of money behind it? And following the thread I originally quoted (the newbie guide to keyword research) to where you've pointed out about backlinks, etc. has made me realise I'm jumping the gun a bit, I should research the keyword and the competition fully before making a full judgement about how good/bad a keyword is. Thank you, this is a bit of a push in the right direction - hopefully I'll get there soon.

Again I'm sorry this is such simple stuff, I'm just trying to minimise the mistakes I'm making before I put in the money, there would be nothing worse in business, and nothing much more offputting, than losing an investment and gaining next-to-none experience, so I'm really grateful to all these little tidbits you offer, they will add up to make a significant difference

Can you speak/understand kanji fluently? Otherwise I wouldn't go for this.. I don't say that from any SEO experience at all, but from a viewpoint of somebody who learnt a fair amount of Japanese (I learnt pinyin however) that Japanese culture and language is very very different to English, in lots of ways. For example, they have a writing style to speak politely depending on how the characters and punctuation are formatted and implemented, and it wouldn't be good to have a website where you can't understand what is written. You may otherwise come across as poorly spoken and potentially in a fashion too polite or too informal for your keyword market.

You should have to go with low competition keywords. Google Adword tool may be helped you at many ways to find some good keyword niches. Afterall It is best keyword research tool.

If this is your first site, I wouldn't worry about losing your investment too much because you'll probably lose it anyway. All you need is a cheap domain and a virtual hosting account, which you should be able to use for your future sites as well.

Just choose a niche that wouldn't be too hard to rank in. Ideally it would be something that does drive lots of traffic, doesn't pay very much (less competition) and is easy to create content for. This way, it's easy to figure out what you're doing right and wrong when your rankings bounce around in the top 10 instead of bouncing around down somewhere nowhere to be found.
