Basic SEO practices for newbies:

Hello

I just want to clarify these.

Is first paragraph is really most important part in your page? and its part of "SEO"?

Thanks for clarification
I'm not really sure what you're asking? If you're asking about whether the first paragraph in the content of you're page is the most important part, then I don't know if I'd say it's the 'most important', but it's definitely an important part. If you're asking about the content of my original post, then pretty much all the paragraphs are important.

For you (and everyone else that doesn't quite understand), just think about what SEO is an acronym for, Search Engine Optimization. What that means is you're Optimizing your website and webpages to make it easier for the Search Engines to know how to best index your pages.

To do that you want to
  1. use content that's relevant for the keywords you want to be indexed for,
  2. formated in such a way to make those keywords even more clear, and
  3. promote your site using those same keywords.
Those three things are the foundation of SEO, everything you're doing to get your website to rank in the SERP will fall into one of those three categories.

Link wheels, link pyramids, and even link pushes are typically all done by creating backlinks within content rich pages using web2.0 platforms. In those cases the top of the pyramid, or the center of the wheel is your money site, and the tier one sites are the web2.0 sites you used your best content on.

A link silo is typically another domain(s) you create as a mini-authority site(s). Then you use those sites for your tier 1 backlinks, and then use each silo as the top of the pyramid, or center of the wheel for all your web2.0 backlinks.

Using link silos accomplishes two things. First, it makes the tier 1 links to your money site much more relevant and powerful because you're creating some authority on those silo sites. Second, it acts as a buffer for your money site to prevent penalties from excessive backlinking campaigns that you might do on the link silos.

You can create link silos on free blogging platforms like wordpress.com or blogger.com, but they're even better if you actually set them up as their own domains. If you do that though, you don't want to use the same hosting account as you have for your money site. The goal is to make them appear to be unrelated to your website other than by the fact they're authority sites extremely targeted to the same topic as your real site is.

Even if you do use link silos, you'll still want to get regular backlinks to your money site as well. What you're trying to avoid is using any artificial link structures and comment spam links directly to your money site. Having 2 or 3 link silos will allow you to do massive backlinking campaigns, including link pyramids and link wheels and the link juice from those efforts will pass to your money site through the link silos with much less risk of a penalty to the money site.

What is the purpose of making a custom 404 page?
A custom 404 page is more about user experience than SEO, but it give you a chance to keep you're visitors on your site once they get there. IF they get a 404 error, then if you have a custom page you can make it more enticing for them to return to your main page or use your search box rather than just leaving your site.

But like I said it isn't really a necessity for SEO at all. Just good website design in some circumstances.

Yeah, spot on response there...to expand on the point of the concept, it is primarily to make use of what would otherwise be a lost prospective client.

There are other reasons to use this that actually DO play into your seo practices:

Tracking page breaks in your code/template, which is the point of a 404 error in most cases anyway - page cannot be displayed, etc.

Tracking the prospect to see if they go back to your site or if they flat-out leave your page.

Tracking extra sales from weaker promotions of products and services that you may be testing out.

As for the sales/marketing side of this coin, you can use rotators to show different links, banners and offers here without being busted as creating a portal, as long as your " RETURN TO THE PROPER AREA OF OUR SITE " link above the posted offer/s.

In listing it this way, it is merely an ' ad spot ' at that point, should any of the search engines take notice of it.

Use your analytics data as to what they are using to get to those error pages and find out what they want from your site to lead them there - them offer it to them as a product or service.

Just a little different perspective.

Good refresher list to look at. This forum is great. Thanks for the share greywolf.

Hi,
I have learned a lot from this forum ( Thank you, all members of BHW ) !!

I wanted to know :
- How much time my blog will take to be indexed if I leave it natural ?

I totally agree with the mixing up of anchor links... it would kinda throw Google off and make your site blend it with the others :)

Is there a an optimal number for how many keywords to focus on? How many is too many?

I'll add my two sense:

When you start a site, only start one. Make it the best you can make it - and keep adding on to it somehow - be creative... Make it better on a weekly/daily basis - something valuable that people will enjoy/benefit from. It may actually take you quite a few months just to create the site and set it up. You're only one person, so do you really think you have time to run multiple sites that will benefit you hugely? No. Seriously... No, you don't. So please, don't try.

Whatever site you're creating, make sure you choose a domain with your main keyword within it. Google favors sites heavily in SERPs if their main keyword phrase is within the URL. Let's do a site about car audio...

Example of domain name: supercaraudio (d)(o)(t)(c)(o)(m)

Setting up meta tags for homepage...

Meta Title: Car Audio|Car Audio Speakers|Car Audio Subwoofers
(BAM... You're good for "Car Audio", "Car Audio Speakers", "Car Audio Subwoofers", "Car Subwoofers" and "Car Speakers")

Meta description: Shop car audio, car audio speakers, car audio subwoofers. Best deals on car speakers and car subwoofers!
(BAM... You're good for the same keywords)

Meta keywords: car audio, speakers, subwoofers, car speakers, car subwoofers
(BAM... You're good for the same keywords)

The page these tags are on must (M-U-S-T) have "Car Audio", "Car Audio Speakers", "Car Audio Subwoofers", "Car Subwoofers" and Car Speakers within its text - even only once each - but at least once.

Onsite page SEO for homepage... All set!

If you're serious about ranking for these keywords...

You will spend some time for the first 4-5 months. And you will spend some money doing so, but nothing to put you into debt... Invest money to make money a whole lot more money. But you need to invest in the right investments... Like the ones below.

This is how you will (And I and others I know have already done) become successful.

Search for all automated backlink submission sites/tools which allows you to submit unique content by the form of spinning (And you must fully spin well - this will take some time but is of G-R-E-A-T benefit). Use a few services for article distribution (make sure each service has it's own network of sites - simply ask them, "are you using the same network as so and so?"), a few for blog commenting (make sure each service has it's own network of sites - simply ask them, "are you using the same network as so and so?"), a few for social networking sites (make sure each service has it's own network of sites - simply ask them, "are you using the same network as so and so?"), a few for social bookmarking sites (make sure each service has it's own network of sites - simply ask them, "are you using the same network as so and so?"), and so on for other types of links (Directories, etc.)

Think of this as a full time job for you (Yes, it is work, at first). Use all of these auto-submission services as frequently as possibly, targeting the example keywords, "Car Audio", "Car Audio Speakers", "Car Audio Subwoofers", "Car Subwoofers" and "Car Speakers". Start with slow drip feeding of links for each service (5-10 per day), if you're a new site. After 2 months bump it up to 40-50 for each submission service. After 4-5 months... once Google has seen that many "people" are "talking" about your site and you've been indexed to rank somewhere in Google for those keywords... BAM... And I mean B-A-M your backlinks, and as many as possible each day from each submission service. Google only expects this (Because your site is awesome, right? Make it "look awesome" to Google - and that's how you do it!). The amount of money you'll make from your site (Because you will start ranking and also be driving a load of traffic to it simply from people finding a lot of these links), whether it be from Google Adsense clicks and/or selling products will allow you to start paying other people and link building companies to build links for these keywords for you.

But... You have to work hard at first, so you can start making enough money to sit here and type what I'm typing while others do your work for you. Get it? Unless of course your bank account is impressive already...

Great advice on the anchor text keyword weighting - have seen that before in this detail, cheers:o
