Basic SEO practices for newbies:

I have just got my website up and running and have started my backlinks campaign this week. Just wanted to say that there are some great tips in this post that I will hopefully be able to put to use and others that are simply over my head! TQ

I think you have added all the important things.
But I want o know what is the importance of press release?
Is there any effect of press release on backlinking or it is helpful for marketing only?

I think all these tips are very effective to generate a lot of traffic....
 
Make a robots.txt file and I like to include a favicon because without them the robots will trigger file not found errors on your server. Be sure to configure your robots.txt correctly. Make a custom 404 page. If your site has more than just a couple of pages then also create a sitemap.xml file. It's not a bad idea to just create a sitemap anyway no matter what, it lets you define the structure of your site to the crawlers. Just search google if you don't know how to do any of that, it's very basic and you can find exact instructions within a minute when you do a search.

Other than that there isn't a lot more you can do for on-site SEO. When people ask about SEO they're always thinking of on-site SEO, but thats the easy and quick part. Just do it and get on with it.

and where exactly should it be uploaded?

Basically at a minimum you can just create a blank file named robot.txt in your public (or www) folder and that'll prevent file not found errors for it in your logs.

For most sites that's probably good enough, but if you actually want to limit crawlers from visiting certain pages or folders on your site then you can add some commands in the file. The specific commands will depend on your site setup. Just google for robots.txt and you'll find many tutorials explaining the different commands you can include in the file.

Sure, there is an importance to press release publishing. However, keep in mind that the point of a press release is to release news; launch, relaunch, revamp site look, product launch, new services/products, etc.

Don't just use press releases to use them, as they do serve a purpose and they will hold more rank juice if you use them carefully and wisely.
