While I am not a newbie; I do feel that sometimes it is good to just get back to the basics. Sometimes one can be consumed with so many options. However, SEO is the foundation that will allow you to build upon without any anxiety about changes with anyone especially the big "G" Google.

Definitely very useful info for newbies, also i would recommend to check free info from different SEO, Keyword research... softwares + subsscibe to newsletters of authorities in that field + some programs offering a trial membership for $1+, this really will help start with minimum expenses!

My first question is to ask about your content practices...are your articles legitimately on point and driving traffic when you post them or are they simply re-spins of simple, general content?
The number 1 downfall of people that use spinner applications is that they get into the bad habit of grabbing whatever content that crosses them, instead of properly keeping in mind that articles are recognized just as well as blog posts. If you content isn't of use or is jibberish, it will cost you, as people are far more prone to remember you for the bad as they are the good posts.
Same goes for video posts.
Next thing, start off by keeping in mind that ALL social media, no matter how well automated it is, is under the watchful eyes of google's new automation crackdown, thanks to Larry Page. He is focused on autoblog content at them moment but it is only the beginning.
You must work your site resources with a natural look and feel. It MUST look random, as if a real person is pulling, working and producing the content. This will show to the potential readers, as well as to the SE monitors.
( As a side note, the autoblog issue is being tracked by your analytics data. If you show up in google's rankings, they will track your site and look for automated behaviors, throwing up red flags. They don't need people watching/scanning to find you anymore. )
Post REAL, legitimate and most importantly, relevant content to your readership and you will be able to generate real traffic of 100's per day, if you are serious about working the site and making real money from it.
' Lazy ' site methods won't last long before being ignored in facebook, twitter and the like.
This sort of social media traffic generation has been around for a number of years. Be sure and look in this forum and online elsewhere for more advanced technique and material on the topic.
In my buisness routine, social marketing is a standard habit and works to generate a steady and very productive stream of traffice for all of my sites.

Tip: Stop looking down the barrels of loaded guns, looking for a ' magic bullet ' before you find it and it takes your head off.
Seriously though, look around, research here and other resources...build a list of 5-10 techniques you want to try and then apply them, test them, perfect them and if they work, keep them and find 5-10 more...if they don't, ditch'em and keep looking for the next 5-10 new ones and repeat the process.
The ' trick ' is to simply do the work and see what works for you. There are unlimited techniques in this forum alone to keep you busy for a lifetime.

Google " creating a keyword anchor " and you will find way more professional examples than most will give here, even as simple as it is.
As as for your question on backlinking...um, not exactly.
Backlinks are easy to get but there is a side effect to them. When a site is related to a bunch of links that have nothing to do with the topic/niche/market that site is ranking for, it pulls both sites down by those backlinks counting against the sites instead of for them.
Backlinks are suppose to be as relevant in topic/niche/market as the rest of the content on a website is.
An example:
You have a website on, say...exotic birds. You are going to write articles on the types of birds, feeding habits, care of the animals, etc. and submit that to the article directories for related backlinks.
That creates a positive backlink due to the topic being relevant, not mattering it is your article or not.
The counter to that would be a bad/irrelevant backlink that damages your site, which would be to link yourself to an article about sea turtles migration habits when you are still on the niche topic of ' exotic birds '...they are completely off point and therefore, count for the lowest backlink value.
