So I came across a few topics recently about doing SEO on Baidu. China's biggest and most popular search engine (I think they consume 78% of the total market). I am wondering if anyone is doing any marketing or promoting anything on there?

As far as I know, not only ranking on baidu is very different, but the entire Chinese culture is very different from Western culture too. For example, they might not be as open / comfortable using credit cards online etc.

Any thoughts on this? I see a huge potential but at the same time, I am lost.

Yea the language will be huge problem too.. Most people who use baidu.. use it in Chinese language so its good for Chinese and limited to china only... but it will be good for you if u know chinese market and Chinese language..

i dont think getting contents in Chinese is a big issue - since it can be outsourced easily. but i am just curious what can be promoted on baidu. I read about how China is pretty strict with contents too - so you cant really say whatever you want in the content.

From what I understand, the government has control over any search results and it's entirely different from google because companies can pay to have their results appear as the number one search result (not like google ads at the top).

Otherwise, the algorithm is something similar to yahoo/google's.

online business in China is basically 1 word delicned into many variations.. Ali baba Group.
That's alibaba, aliexpress, taobao, alipay, yahoo! China, etc..

They are the IM godfathers in China. for baidu SEO, i really don't know about their algo and stuff.. just about chinese consumer behaviour online. they won't trust anything else than taobao.

I am surprise there arent any further input in this. Baidu is the one of the top 5 search engines in the world (i think they might be second, i forgot where I saw the stats, and its higher than Yandex).

Yes, Most of chinese use the alipay and it is hard to create the quality content if you are not the native speaker

I do lots of business with china and have never found any unwillingness to use cc's online.

The biggest difference I notice is that (to me) is that they are the most unwilling to pay a published price and will try to negotiate every price. You can't win them over with service either (like the indians, who also negiotiate), lowest price wins, even if it's an inferior product (Indians will barter, but are also very loyal customers if you give them what they need).

I have in no way cracked the Baidu puzzle though (my china traffic comes from the usual places) - thats on this years to do list!

ive dealt with people at baidu.. I can only say that you better have a good tracking mechanism in place.

and also, chinese domain need to be registered with the government last checked. not sure how that might affect seo, but that does affect sem.

I am a Chinese and i should say most of western people knows nothing about China, nowadays since google have been kick its ass in china(i prefer google result personally) , baidu become the biggest and maybe the only search engine we use daily.

Alipay is good and free not like papal. taobao is like online market for newbies but Chinese online users at my level now using 360buy and other online b2C market too. Alibaba is focus on TMALL not taobao and they want the alipay to be online currency . they might start to open a bank them self.

any question about china you can ask me , or any business opportunity for me.:)

I would like to know more about using Baidu

Baidu is a piece of shit, in term of SEO view.

You work damn hard to rank ur websites on the top, then Baidu personally calls you and ask you to do Baidu ads.
If you say NO, then they manually kick away ur websites to nowhere.

To manually search on Baidu, you hardly find anything useful and helpful. That is a search engine all for money, junk ads full of everywhere.

Such an old thread. I think things have changed quite a lot compared with that in 2013. The used BAT(Baidu Ali Tencent) has gone, and baidu is much smalled than the other two. It is in the 2 tier in China. In my opinion, baidu seo is still important, but do business through Weixin( a product of Tencent) is more popular, and you can make really a good money if you are good at marketing. But the water is very very deep and I do think it is hard for a foreigner especially know nothing about Chinese culture.

As a Chinese, I have to say Baidu is piece of shit as a main search engine in China, they just remove your site from SERP if you don't pay them, and they show almost all the paid results on the first page if the keywords is profitable, and it's a disaster for SEO because no matter how good you skills are, you will only show on the second page..
BTW, ranking on Baidu is much different than ranking on Google, you will need a lost of footer backlinks from authority sites, that works best, the OnPage is important as well of course.

The question is, does similar strategies work in ranking on Baidu as they are for Google? Baidu does give great emphasis on Paid listing and they kind of spam them for lucrative keywords such as, "Hospital in Beijing". Obviously, that in Chinese.

Regardless, there is still opportunity to rank organically. They have enough ethics to mark paid listing with a blue triangle to not deceive humble users on it.

Also, I'm not sure why you said Baidu to be smaller, from all my Chinese friends in the US, they all use Baidu as their primary search engine to look for content in Chinese. It dominates China. Baidu is there Google, and other search engine such as https://www.so.com/ could be their DuckDuckGo lol.

If anyone know of case study/strategies to rank on Baidu, do share. The amount of money rich Chinese are willing to burn on-line is insane.
