So I came across a few topics recently about doing SEO on Baidu. China's biggest and most popular search engine (I think they consume 78% of the total market). I am wondering if anyone is doing any marketing or promoting anything on there?

As far as I know, not only ranking on baidu is very different, but the entire Chinese culture is very different from Western culture too. For example, they might not be as open / comfortable using credit cards online etc.

Any thoughts on this? I see a huge potential but at the same time, I am lost.

i dont think getting contents in Chinese is a big issue - since it can be outsourced easily. but i am just curious what can be promoted on baidu. I read about how China is pretty strict with contents too - so you cant really say whatever you want in the content.

From what I understand, the government has control over any search results and it's entirely different from google because companies can pay to have their results appear as the number one search result (not like google ads at the top).

Otherwise, the algorithm is something similar to yahoo/google's.

online business in China is basically 1 word delicned into many variations.. Ali baba Group.
That's alibaba, aliexpress, taobao, alipay, yahoo! China, etc..

They are the IM godfathers in China. for baidu SEO, i really don't know about their algo and stuff.. just about chinese consumer behaviour online. they won't trust anything else than taobao.

I am surprise there arent any further input in this. Baidu is the one of the top 5 search engines in the world (i think they might be second, i forgot where I saw the stats, and its higher than Yandex).

I do lots of business with china and have never found any unwillingness to use cc's online.

The biggest difference I notice is that (to me) is that they are the most unwilling to pay a published price and will try to negotiate every price. You can't win them over with service either (like the indians, who also negiotiate), lowest price wins, even if it's an inferior product (Indians will barter, but are also very loyal customers if you give them what they need).

I have in no way cracked the Baidu puzzle though (my china traffic comes from the usual places) - thats on this years to do list!

ive dealt with people at baidu.. I can only say that you better have a good tracking mechanism in place.

and also, chinese domain need to be registered with the government last checked. not sure how that might affect seo, but that does affect sem.

I am a Chinese and i should say most of western people knows nothing about China, nowadays since google have been kick its ass in china(i prefer google result personally) , baidu become the biggest and maybe the only search engine we use daily.

Alipay is good and free not like papal. taobao is like online market for newbies but Chinese online users at my level now using 360buy and other online b2C market too. Alibaba is focus on TMALL not taobao and they want the alipay to be online currency . they might start to open a bank them self.

any question about china you can ask me , or any business opportunity for me.:)
