By the way I have just provided you with a backlink. I have linked the word "Wikipedia article"
in my above sentence with a backlink which forwards you to Wikipedia. Hope that answers your question.

Everything in a web page that points to another page is a link. Like its name suggests, it is used to link two documents on the internet so you can navigate in your browser by clicking and you don't have to memorize or type every webpage you want to visit.
Google view each link to a website like a trust vote, the more votes (baklinks) a site has, it gives it more trust and get better positions on search results wich equals to more visits. That is why they are very valuable for webmasters.
Basically:
Backlinks = better google rankings = more visits = more money.
