Free backlinks are typically directory or profile backlinks which won't help you rank much. You'll need some sort of blogging backlinks like web2.0s but you'll still have the costs of needing good content for those blogs and basic seo knowledge.

these days if the link is free OR easy to get, it won't help you much.
if u do go down the web 2.0 road, you really need to treat them as money site, and give them solid backlinks
