Hi. Is it better to send backlinks to just a few of your site's pages, or the majority?

The more you diversify the more of an authority site your website becomes...

Linking 80% to the homepage and 20% to the inner page is better than linking to home page. It will look natural :)

I actually do very close to the opposite... very little to the root page and almost all to inner pages. My sites are set up to rank inner pages though so that may be why we operate differently there.

It all depends of the site. If your moneymaker is on the homepage then you will have more on the homepage.
..but most of the cases you will have lot more link pointing to inner pages.

My suggestion is to concentrate by creating backlinks for homepage. The backlinks keyword is smaller the inner page backlinking was good.in the inner page you can create diversified backlinks to get good result.

70% homepage 30% internal pages thats what i do but if you have a e-commerce site that would be 50% homepage and 30% category pages 20% product pages

Thats a very good question. Our agency specializes in building edu and gov links like these below:

http://www.law.ufl.edu/academics/clinics/civil/gator-team-child/useful-links

As you can see from these examples, these edu sites don't always link out to the home page, some will link out to an internal page. Either way, as you know, getting links like these are very powerful regardless of what page you link to. You can always leverage pagerank sculpting to funnel the link juice to back to your home page or any page you want to rank higher as Matt Cutts explains in the video below. This is exactly what we do for our clients:

i alway link to inner post because im trying to rank those too, im into authority sites, with microniches you sudenlly run out of ideas to write about and make it look natural, thats why microniches always point to homepages and have a red flag if google sees this
