Backlinks vs Content

I hear numerous times "content is king" but as the time pass by i think people might be wrong.
I see people doing heavy backlink building for few pages of content and get many visitors.
On the other hand i build many pages of average content and few backlinks and have low number of visitors. But that is just my case of few sites i hope iam wrong.
So i'am asking you guys, does a lot of content better then a lot of backlinks?
Its easier for me to build content then backlinks, i never succeeded in link building.

Good content should bring backlinks, at least that is what G thinks. If you build links to your site then you are taking a shortcut. Apart from backlinks and bounce rate, there is no way for a search engine to know if content is good or not.

i thought content was king too. my site has hundreds of pages and brings in just under 1000 hits a day. done virtually no backlinking. started to do backlinking now. we will see in a few months

Yes i know google doesn't have a way to find out if content is good or not, but nether do backlinks prove quality of your site.
Does google give more value to quantity of content or backlinks?
I would like to earn some money on adsense from content then pay for backlinks, but its seams that it can not be done.

That's the whole point of Google PageRank. It ranks your backlinks for quality too. They figure, if the top-ranked sites link to you, then the chances are much better that your content is of quality.

Digging a little deeper will tell you that Google owns all the big sites. ;)

The "content is the king" is more White Hat slogan. If you create good content, people will like it and link to it - therefore you'll be getting backlinks.

But you have to have original content not duplicate, otherwise Google will probably lower the rankings for these pages, deindex your duplicate pages, or perhaps even whole site.

@danny_relic: If you dig a little deeper you'll find that Google will soon own Earth :=)

Well i have original content, but people manually linking to my content are too rear, i don't think i got more then 5 backlinks that way, and none with anchor.

Backlinks give you traffic and Good Rankings

Content Gives you sales

So both are important , You can't sell anything if you don't have good content

Unless a site is unique, very few people will willingly link to it. If you don't build links your competitors will and you will have no chance.

BINGO! You have BOTH. You make a good site and it's a business, treat it as a business. If you have a business that provides a service or a product, you need sales and you need advertising. By getting backlinks you're helping your website along and there's nothing wrong with that.:)

You can have thousands of links and rank #1 in google but with shitty content you'd get nothing out of it.

I have clients with one page sites, built links for them, ranked good in search engines and they earn good money out of them.

Be realistic guys, how many people would link to your sites even though you have great content, while by only spending few bucks you can get as many backlinks as you want.

usually you can outrank most sites by keep improving on site optimization - when the competition and volume is low. However when competition gets heavier on site optimization has very low value - this calls for backlinks

also, backlinks themselves don't bring quality content, quality content will bring backlinks.

Backlinks is more important than content. But sure good contents can bring blacklinks naturally ;)

I agree with the topic. It sucks really... My website is now 4 months old and I invested 200 or more hours only for the content... sometimes I sit 8-10 hours behind my notebook and try to perfect my content. I gave my best. And I get only 5-20 visitors per day... But I choose a hard fighted niche, so thats another problem...

That google Backlink system is crap... If your homepage is new, you got no chance against the BIG sites... But when I take a look at the big sites on P1-3 on g**le, they got almost old content wich is not more actual for the product.

And then I gave my best to give them people the best informations about some product and get 5 visitors a day... thats crap...

Content is king because quality content will get you natural backlinks. Not to mention, the best backlinks will be gotten inside content such as blog posts or blog rolls. Nobody is going to put poor quality sites in there. Just my interpretation of what is meant when that is said.
