Backlinks actually KILLED my ranking

Hey I used a well known bookmarking service (edit: its not a service from BHW) to get only 25 bookmark backlinks to a page that I had that was already at #3 for a low competition keyword in my niche.

After the bookmarks were completed my position of #3 dropped to god knows where. Maybe below #70 right now, I don't even know. But its not on page 1, 2, or 3.

Only 7 of the 25 backlinks stuck but it seems like those 7 backlinks were enough to get my page taken off the first couple pages of the google serps.


I was under the impression that backlinks can never really "hurt" you, they just won't add any value. But I'm starting to think this is wrong. When I inspect the back links of my competitors' who are still ranking on page one for this keyword they all have 0 backlinks. As soon as I added backlinks I was taken off the page one... Damn it man FUCK

Dude you're mistaken.. It might've caused google to revalue your site or it's just dancing, but 7 backlinks will not get you punished. This is simply too ridiculous. I managed building and seeing 12k backlinks to ONE inner page in a month and I wasn't punished.

After I bought some SEO service on fiverr, my whole website went Dancing on Google,... only after I started doing Backlinks/Web2.0's myself the rankings increased,... it's best to do all SEO yourself, less outsourcing.

You weren't punished, but did it have any positive effect?

Keep building backlinks (preferably with web 2.0 sites / blogs) and you'll be back at number 1. The worst thing you can do right now is stop backlinking.

as long as you got unique content, you're fine.

you're only going through the google dance, and if i were you i'd just add a few more backlinks over the next week and add some unique content. it could be a week or month until you get a stable ranking, but don't get obsessed over it. i've read many instances where people get out of the sandbox/dance by doing nothing, and then i've read where people did a bunch of backlinking/adding content and got nowhere. just move on and check back on your site in a few weeks

I don't know but I'm agree KHMNTCPR8... I started to do some backlinks from youtube to my site (in spanish) and some article directorys after 2 months everything went rigth... 100 -200 visits every day only from youtube... and about a 100 from the article directorys... then suddenly my site went from page 1 to page 7 WTF !!!

then I looked that my site has over 70 backlins I said WTF !! why? how is this possible?? then I saw a whole lot of websites (that I never visited before in my whole life) with my videos on it... and of course with the video description with my URL on it... those websites that just add videos from youtube to their sites... that make my blog went down you can check it I'm not lying...

backlinks killed my blog... now I'm just ketting 10 visits a day if I'm lucky..

you do know that google deindexed all co.cc domains, right? it wasn't the backlinks.

this is a great example of why you shouldn't believe all the shit that is peddled on the forums. it's best to just take a bit of the wisest advice, then take action and learn from your own experience.

You are being knocked around... KEEP building links. Within the first few weeks, you might actually see some loss... KEEP building. Build relevant backlinks, and make them are organic looking as possible. Consistency and relevancy is the key!

RELAX!!!! heh, no really it takes awhile to get your site stable. I had a site go from #2 for a competive word to #720 for 2 months!!!! Scared the crap out of me but then out of nowhere it popped out a little stronger and it seems stable now (crossing fingers). That's what I heard would happen but when it actually happens it throws you off. Now if my site keeps doing that then I'll be pissed and wondering why but I think once it get's stable you should be fine.

One better: I bought a backlink service I'd use before on fiverr that had done well for me. I bought it for two domains.
One improved. The other went into the toilet.
The difference: the toilet domain was new. The other one was aged.
I'm still building to both - just have to wait for the new domain to come back.

I landed top 3 for a keyword that wasn't competitive.. You said most of your competitors have 0 backlinks, meaning you also have an easy KW

Its not my entire site thats not stabe I was talking about a single page. Its a very important page for the coming month of November 2011... it was going to be my fucking money page for a huge event in November.

This site is 3 years old so I know how it goes, this isn't the first page I've had on page 1, or lost from page 1. I target about 70-80 keywords a year (with this site) so I have a good grasp of what goes on with my pages. I can get page 1 rankings if I just make posts early enough ahead of the competition. I even know how to take advantage of the Google's video results and get my pages to show up with a video in the SERPs. But this ONE page was my most important so I thought I would safe gaurd it from future competition by doing some small backlinks. But damn none of the other SERP results have ANY backlinks which makes my page look like it doesn't belong with the rest.. The other pages I have ranking for other keywords have 0 backlinks, just good content and my video set up to show up as a video result which goes to the top of the serps

This has happened before too, and the rankings didn't come back even after I hired a professional SEO firm. They did get me to rank accidentally for a similar keyword phrase, but NEVER the exact keyword phrase that we agreed to. Anyways fuck complaining, I usually never complain on here, just really felt like it because damn I hate losing out on fucking easy money to stupid ass google's changing algo

its easy right now yes, but in about 3 months it will be intensly competitive

i try and rank as early ahead as possible to gain any kind of advantage and it works (that is untill i fuck it up some way lol)

You are just dancing and you still have 3 months before the event, take it easy. A bunch of social bookmarks can't be harmful.

Btw how do you monetize movies these days?

Your dancing and you just have to wait it out. Its still kind of weird that your dancing because of just 25 social bookmarks.
