If I create one main site and a bunch of smaller sites, with the purpose of the smaller sites to be purely backlinks, are those backlinks going to really help me at all? I'd link all 5 (for example) sites together so each is basically weaved together by links. Would Google nail you for that?

You mean like creating a linkwheel of sorts with your own sites or using Web 2.0s?
I'm a noob, so I'm not entirely familiar with the concept of a linkwheel, but if it is anything like it sounds, yeah...Basically just a mesh of sites linking to one another so each benefits from the backlinks on all of them. Each site would, of course, have other SEO done to it, so they aren't just going to be a page of links or anything like that.

No lol, backlinks, no matter how you have 'em, there always good for your main site.
While on the subject of backlinks, I have a question about them...
If I just write the URL to a link out, does it count as a backlink, or does it have to actually be in the proper HTML form like <a href="blahblah">blah</a>?

I would interlink them randomly through several pages, make sure there is relevant content on the pages though, and the more unique it is the better. Wish you the best of luck.

This works really well and his link structure is really complicated which doesn't leave any footprints.
