backlink outreach - stealing keywords?

Just starting to do outreach for my site to get some backlinks but I am getting paranoid that by doing this the sites are going to see the affiliate programs / low comp keywords I have found and create content around it (and easily outrank me as my sites only about 4 months old). Am I crazy or is this a real possibility most of the sites are news style. Im guessing that i don't really have a choice if i want my site to rank

I'm thinking that for now I'm only going to outreach to sites that my competitors have backlinks on
