Hi, I am new to the world of SEO and I was asked (for the company I work for) to do a backlink analysis of our site and of some competitors.
My question is, are there any parts and metrics that you think are very important?
Because what came to me to do mainly is to compare:
- auority of my domain and the competitors' ones;
- number of backlinks;
- quality of backlinks (via the domain authority of the link provider);
- anchor text, trying to divide the valid ones from the spam or broken ones (and comparing the percentages to the total).
That seems a bit low to me, though. I looked online but I am not really satisfied with what I found.
Are there any other points or metrics that you would evaluate?

Thanks!

Don't just count backlinks; assess their relevance and the context (niche alignment matters). Check link types (follow vs. nofollow) and where they sit on the page. Watch for unnatural growth patterns—could signal spammy tactics. Had a case where prioritizing link relevance over sheer volume made a huge SEO difference.

This is a really intersting thing. Do you have any articles where I can go into more detail on this topic?

Yeah these are the main factors keep focusing and do the process perfectly then it's a win for you

Look into the relevance of linking domains to your industry; relevance can sometimes outweigh authority. Evaluate the link growth over time to spot any unnatural spikes that could indicate spammy link-building practices.
