I drive sometimes 15 mph below the speed limit and never had something like that happen to me, but I live in a stand your ground state, so maybe it prevents people from doing that shit when I drive so slow.

I must admit I hate them as well. I never put anything on my car when my kids were little. I figured it's mostly about my driving not anyone else. If someone's going to run into you it'll happen whether or not you have a sign on your rear window - it simple physics.
Well Christ, I don't take my "Disabled" hanger down when I am not using it either.
I have had that happen a time or two. I generally lead the follower on a goose chase into a blind turn and meet them with a machete out when they round the blind turn.

It's happened to me so many times around where I live in California. There was one soccer mom several years ago who pulled up next to my car after tailgating me and shouted about the speed limit being a suggestion. She then floored the pedal into an elementary school zone.

I'll never understand that, the whole mentality of Speed Limit = Minimum Speed. People drive like that no matter how high gasoline prices will get and they will still complain. I remember back during the high prices of 2007 and 2008 no one cared they all were driving 75-80 in a 70, instead of something like 55.

Admitting that I didnt' read every word of every post above so if it was already said then sorry.
One big reason people do it is for fire and rescue. I have heard of fire depts etc.. encouraging such signs as well as signs noting a count.
Its just like when you go to a hotel and they ask how many people are staying in your room. (Well cheap hotels might want to charge you extra, but for mid/nicer hotels) they need to know because if there is a fire they hand that data to the fire department and they can use it as a guideline to know how many people they are looking for.
Im sure there are people proud to be a parent (and as a parent I can say Internet Marketing is a cake walk and parenting is the single most challenging job I have ever faced, no customer can ever be as annoying as a 3yr old at times. Love my kids but they drive me insane sometimes).
So some people are just like "look I made it" No different then people above feeling the need to call names or make fun of the people that hang the signs. I mean really, there is basic psychology here.
Its never occurred to me that I would slow down or be any more careful around such a car then I normally am. If that was the intent then they fail in my book, honestly its never even crossed my mind, lol
No I don't have one, I don't have anything on my van (aka kidmobile) or my truck (4X4 full size aka fun mobile). Vehicles are tools, their purpose is to get you from point A to Point B efficiently, safely, at a nice temperature, ideally comfortably, and allow me to listen to either music or an audio book along the way. Then again Im a minimalist with everything from a vehicle to my house to my office.
Anyway, why do you do anything? Really, look at 10 things you do in your life every day and I promise you can find at least 10 people that would call you a cu*t for doing it. But all is well because you could find at least 10 people that that would make fun of those 10 people for stuff they do.
mudbutt nailed it, I have way to many problems to worry about a sticker on someone elses car or be wasting this much time typing about in on a forum... lol

Don't knock these cheesy car signs, I have a nice little sideline in vinyl car graphics.
