Authority Website Building Questions

I have been wanting to build a nice established authority website for a while now. However, my head has been filled with so much micro niche knowledge that I can't accurately do my research for authority website building.
I know that when building micro niche sites, keyword research is important like how many searches per month, cost per click, and so forth. I also have a set blueprint to follow when keyword researching for micro niche sites, but none for authority websites. Nor have I found a product explaining on building and marketing a profitable authority website.

So now my questions:

1. How is the keyword research done for an authority website?

2. Do you first choose a broad competitive niche like "laptops" and find long tail profitable keywords based on the niche?

4. How do you know if a keyword could be a possible authority website?

3. For the domain would you buy something broad like "laptopinfo.com" or something more keyword rich and long tail like "mousesforlaptops.com"?
Or possibly a more brand-able web 2.0 domain name like "lappytop.com"?

4. Can you recommend me a product or e-book I can find on here explaining authority websites?
