Hello everyone,

Today while doing kw research for my new site, I found a few great keywords all belonging to the same niche. If I choose the main keyword for my site and try to make it an authority site, the chances that my site will rank at the top for it are nearly zero anytime soon in the future.

Whereas if I go for the long tail ones then I think I can rank for them with quality content.

Now, I am in a dilemma as what to do? Make an authority site and try to rank for the long tail keywords or build many sites in the same niche each targeting a specific long tail.

Primary KW - 140000 local monthly searches
Longtail KWs - 1000-6600 Local Monthly searches

Authority site is best for long term stability. Don't backlinks spam this site just build good quality links - automated or otherwise.

Niche sites may be easy to rank but Google is always on the lookout for such sites. High chances of penalties and/or rank downgrades

I can't as I don't have the resources as of now, I will have to choose any one.

Then authority is better IMHO for long term business. The only problem with authority - you have to take the branding path, instead SEO.

[h=2]Authority Can you say POWER!!!!! if you want long term success and micro if you need short term.[/h]

I would do both. But I would start with a small site to test the market. There is nothing worse than building a big site to later find out it doesn't convert.

So make a small site get traffic to it and see how much money you make, then decide if it is worth doing an authority site.

I'll just copy-paste an answer I gave on a similar question a few days ago:

Authority site:
Pros:
- more google love if not spammed
- more added value (the domain and content will be worth more than many small sites combined reported to the sales value)
- higher conversion rate (you can cross sell, up sell the users to any other product category via recommendations)

Cons:
- vulnerability (if your site gets penalized or nSEO'd you lose most of your business)
- long time to develop and grow

Many small sites:
Pros:
- if done correctly, no footprints, different ip's -> invulnerability (they can take down a site or 2, you'll still hang strong)
- short development and growth to reach full potential

Cons:
- high risk of getting penalized by G
- low added value (one single domain isn't worth as much)
- lower conversion rate ( you can't cross sell or up sell from one site to the other, you create footprints and you're whole network can be hit)

Weigh your options and chose the correct way to go.

Authority site are easy to talk about but it is really very difficult to create and establish one.
