As long as the other person intends no hurt or expresses no intention to hurt, "dear", "sir", "madam", etc are all fine. Wonderful opportunities may get missed if one is so sensitive to such general things.

There is "hurt" because it triggers some of us to not trust you since so many catfish use that word in their scam game.

This is a professional forum where we are doing business with each other.

Calling me "dear" is like calling me "honey".

When sending a message to a customer, you should be only using Mr. (last name) for men or Ms. (last name) for women.

Do not use dear, boss or bro. If you use dear/bro/boss with a customer, they are going to think you are a scammer or not respond.

In most situations, you shouldn't use sir or mam either.

If you want to show respect, use Mr. (last name) or Ms. (last name).

I made a thread a while back talking about how the English language is evolving and changing constantly due to it being used by so many people around the world.

So maybe using "Dear" is not ok for Americans, but if it's ok for the 70% of other speakers then it's gonna become adopted by majority vote.

I'm talking about how linguistics in general works here.

Personally, I think that indians could use more common wording, and that native English speakers should be more open to change.

By the way, in French it's fine to say Dear friend (Cher ami) when speaking to a person of the same gender, so English should be more willing to increase it's repertoire, it wouldn't hurt it.

Au contraire dear, I think it's quite elegant and smart.

Used as a formal greeting, it's especially useful if you're not sure of the sex of the person you're talking to.

Besides, I'm pretty sure dear friend is used in old english.

Never mind but Indians are the most loving people on the planet. Even the guests are treated as gods in Indian culture. Atithi Devo Bhava!

Honestly it's a cultural thing and I do not expect anyone to understand it but it is what it is.

Personally, i think that there is no American Language but Americans are having their own accent of English in far Wild West. They are also having tons off ignominious speechs too by their English Language speaking clauses. Without any doubt such bad usages are remnant of their cowboy times what i think personally.

For example, while i'm watching sort of American series or movies as if that i feel to hear only "man, fuck, shit, slut and goddamn." too. And unfortunately we are learning this language as foreigners in their streets, by their movies and by many of their other publications.

Americans are using such slang words easyly to eachothers according to us. We as Turks are unable to call eachothers in that manner and it's very shame and ethicless especially if we don't know eachothers at all. On the other hand, "dear" means "estimable" or "valuable person" in our language too and matter if you address a person like that.

As a result, every nation has their own way of speaking and the globe not only turning around of "American Cowboys".

An English proverb says that "do unto others, as you would have them do unto you"
 
lol people in this thread trying to justify this from culturological view are nuts or havent been online long enough. Theres memes around it, telegram stickers videos and all other funny shit. Anyone who works online for a while and gets greeted with hello sir, hello dear etc in a message/email/introduction will instantly think of you as potential scam. Why? Because that's how most of scammers interact. Its not even a indians only that use it. My workers from other countries used it to ( i banned the word in work chats we have)
