Guys I have noticed many website in fashion category get better rankings through lots of use of pictures and very few words ranging from 100-150 words only.

Like ELLE, harperbazar, thesartorialist dot com.

    What you guys think?

That's because fashion is a visual interest.

So obviously more pictures and less words will appeal. Plus the target market is young women, who lets be honest are not renowned for their desire to sit and read lots of information when there is shopping, keep fit and make-up to do (yep a sexist generalisation, but it is true, that's why fashion is marketed the way it is).

Generally, content with highly relevant images does not convert much higher, but it does increase relevance for the reader which builds trust and time on page.

Add in a video and a great call to action, and you're onto a killer converter though.

Yes, it is. Images speak louder than words so pages with images and as well videos get fairly good amount of clicks.

Images and videos can make a difference.

But it totally depends on your site. As you have said your site is on fashion category. So, yeah it can work.

Images break up boring text filled pages, the topic and niche are important too.

If you're discussing fashion then people want to see the different products, styles, colours etc.

If you're article is talking about tea bag production, then the image can be there to demonstrate the method, but the topic will still be unappealing to most people.

An article that has 3-5 images and media like video in most cases will perform better than the article without it.
Few images are also good for SEO

Well people are more likely to spend time reading an article if it features images.
I'd argue that it ain't the images themselves that improves the performance but the fact that they improve the visitor user experience and thus the page ranks higher.

Interesting idea. I decided to run my factor correlation software on the search term "fashion trends 2017". The software measures over 300 different on page factors for the top 100 results in Google and calculates how well each factor correlates with ranking position in Google.

The number of images does not correlate with rank position:

But the number of social integrations the result page has do appear to matter:

    upload_2017-2-24_7-57-20.png

Something appears to be specifically happening with tumblr

    upload_2017-2-24_7-58-26.png

Some one mentioned video, but specifically YouTube does not correlate:

    upload_2017-2-24_7-59-23.png

keyword matches in title attributes appear to pack a punch:

    upload_2017-2-24_8-1-9.png

    Hmmm microdata authorship:
    upload_2017-2-24_8-8-23.png

Hmmm microdata description ... Im sensing a pattern here. :)

    upload_2017-2-24_8-9-9.png

In fact a number of the microdata factors correlated... basically all the tags related to authors, publishers, and articles. but surprisingly not the photo related markup. Schema.org markup appears to work to if your prefer that:

    upload_2017-2-24_8-12-45.png

I bet visitors really like and come for the photos. So photos satisfy the search, but as far as Google organic web results go it appears to still be based on the text portions of the page. I am actually surprised to not see images correlating stronger. I suppose Google doesn't have a good way to assess user interaction/satisfaction with an image on a page. So maybe it makes sense that the data shows Google is sticking to the text on the page for web search. How would Google tell if a page with one good image is better than three other pages with 20 images? Or the opposite... pages with 1 crappy image versus pages with lots of crappy images.

Maybe high authority fashion sites are exploiting their authority be reducing their text content sizes and that isn't a tactic that the rest of us can employ.
    Cheers!

    @validseo interesting

about img alt tags and image itself - they cant have repetitive alt tags, and theres should be always a certain ratio of images to text. for 10 images id put couple thousands of words. usually 3-4 with good alts is enough.
and it makes sense, no point to make empty page with 40 images even if it has sense to people in fashion it might not make sense to bots

sites like pinterest somehow excluse from this rule same as wikipedia excludes from keyword density rule, they have it usually pretty big yet they are #1
