This is not news but it's amazing the poor mobile experiences I still see around. I do most browsing from my phone as when I'm on my computer I'm working not surfing. Having a responsive site that adapts to the viewport it is being viewed from is essential. Unfortunately a lot of "responsive" Wordpress themes are still pretty rough on the phone. In regards to layout, simple is better. Remember it's about your content and keeping the visitor on the track you want them to be on (ideally some sort of funnel that leads them to a clear single call-to-action).

Yes, I have been for the past year. Especially if your site is for local. The majority of local searches are done on a mobile device. You can also sell this to local businesses that don't have mobile website. Just use Wordpress and a responsive theme.

You pretty much have to these days and it will be more so as we move forward. The majority of my UVs are mobile on many of my sites and if have anything local (I do local for a fair amount of clients) the numbers are very high (over 70% Mobile in many cases).

is there a web site that shows you what your pages will look like on a mobile? this way i can tell if they are optimized correctly.

Try this one:

Code:
http://www.brickandmobile.com/mobile-emulator/

It shows you how a site would look on iPhone 3G, iPhone 4S, iPAD, HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy Note and BlackBerry 9700.

Hope this helps. :)

If you have a local site you HAVE to have a responsive site, otherwise you are losing sales.

Hi,
Yes, i mostly use wp so i try to have responsive wp themes in all of my projects, most are not perfect but it's better than not being responsive at all, because like everybody said most of my traffic comes from mobile devices.
