Yeah - while there is an algorithm THAT complex that even a team of boffins at Google don't know exactly what's going to happen (read the list of apologies MC has made in the last 4 months after one total feck up after another) then having the arrogance to think they now have sussed it all to the extent that they have gained "internet omnipotence and omnipresence" is ridiculous

^^^^^^ A six year old post proclaiming "The End OF SEO" on "Search Engine Journal". [a well respected WH blog], that procalims the end of SEO about every 6 months - like one of those dullard
Mayan prophecy jerks "The Calendar os some ancient civilization doesn't go further than the end of this year - so that means the end of the world..." Errm How exactly? If someone finds my business plan in the future and goes
"Shit - this plan finished in 2015 - maybe that's when the world ended..so why are we still here? Wow what a tremendous mystery Let's write a knob-cheese book about it"
Go back to any year from about 2002 and you'll see the same crap. "The end is nigh the internet is doomed.
The web grows every day. More pages to index, more sites. more users more hits.
They are not developing the new "Uber Method" of knowing exactly the purpose, legitimacy and motives of every piece of content and link on the net - HOW THE HELL COULD THEY?
They are running hard just to keep up, and looking at the piss poor "domain stuffed" search results they are currently promoting (this is easily the very worst set of results for quality I've ever known) Dross on page 1, "contact forms", "privacy procedures", "meet the team" blank pages and other crap ranking high and proud for search terms that should be offering value and information to the searcher but instead are offering them meaningless drivvel
Google's abilty to sort good from bad has dipped dramatically in the past 2-3 months, so now we are to believe they have a magic button that will suddenly sort it out?
People are LEAVING GOOGLE in the past 18 months - in sizeable number.
Their percentage of search traffic is decreasing pretty much for the first time ever.
Their comscore is 68% still by far the biggest and in terms of overall number of searches an increase, (but this is because there are more searches these days as people use mobile devices all the time - but this will flatten out in the next 18 months or so) but as MARKET share, well as recently as 2010 (Googles best year) their comscore was close to 75%. 2011 and 2012 have seen Bing and Yahoo start to eat back at Googles share (now with about 14% each).
Look at it this way. 1 in 3 searches AREN'T from Google. So no matter what Google does you should still have 33% of your SE traffic. And, if you have a decent site, you should never rely on SE traffic alone anyway. Social media, online presence (niche blogs and forums) should account for at least 40% of the visits to an authority site. Most of my sites get less than 50% of their traffic from Google, and, because the blogs and forums are niche specific, they also convert into sign ups and sales a whole lot better than raw search engine traffic as well.
This sort of talk is "Shock and Awe" it's designed to scare people off IM and SEO. It's getting the message out to anyone who has yet to start an IM career that it's a waste of time.
IT'S PROPAGANDA PURE AND SIMPLE
It's often made by those who - while pretending to be "White Hat" SEO (whatever the fuck that really is) are selling their own agenda, products, services and information on the back of it.
"Ooh - look - most SEO is bad - and we know the only way to stay "clean and pure". Join us and do it our White Hat way - and while you are - and while your at it, memebrship to our scheme is gonna set you back two hundred dollar a month - though for that we do offer a rank tracking service [that you can get elsewhere for about $14"
[Insert blatent plug for Basstrackerboats excellent "Serpsbuddy" here]
Stay wise people, and keep working and shifting your tactics. No big issue. If you get into trouble - float yourself out of it with good onsite content on fresh URL's and sensible linking to them.
