With evolving algorithms, are you focusing more on retaining viewers within a single video or keeping them on the platform longer?

Honestly, session time is king right now. If your video makes someone stay on YouTube—even if they go watch someone else’s clip next—the algorithm will love you and push you to the moon.

I usually try to loop them into my own playlists using end screens. If people watch your video and then immediately close the app, your reach is going to tank. Just focus on keeping the session alive, and the impressions will follow.

Both are important but session time is king now because it keeps people on the platform longer.

While individual watch time is obviously key, platforms are really pushing for that whole ecosystem engagement now. We want them staying on the app, finding our stuff, then finding more stuff, and just generally living there

Both matter, but retention on the video comes first. If people don’t watch most of your video, it won’t get pushed at all. Once that’s solid, then session time (keeping them on the platform) helps a lot — things like good end screens, playlists, and smooth transitions between videos.

So priority is: strong retention, then extend session
No retention = no distribution, no matter what.

watch time first, because if people don't stay on your video you wont get pushed at all, session time comes after by linking videos and playlists
