Are We Entering a New World Order Where Even Developers Are Becoming Optional?

Lately I keep thinking about this “new world order” everyone talks about.


With AI, automation, no-code tools and ready-made systems, it feels like even developers are only needed up to a certain point now. Things that used to require full teams can be done by one person with the right tools.


You don’t need to code to build apps.
You don’t need developers to launch stores.
You don’t need teams to run marketing or support.


So what’s really happening here?


Is technology slowly taking everything out of human hands?
Or are we just not keeping up?


In the past, learning a solid skill was enough. Now the tools evolve faster than people do. It feels like knowing how things work matters less than knowing how to use systems efficiently.


Maybe the problem isn’t that skills are dying — maybe static skills are.


Do developers become useless?
Or do they just need to shift into automation, system design, and problem-solving roles?


Curious how others see this:
Are we being replaced…

Even at the Google DevFest's they're pushing people to branch out

Legal execs, accountants, marketers... Sales may be the safest bet, if you know what you're selling
 
First one, humans can never be useless
The creator is always Greater than the created...in all wise
Ai is catching up in lots of areas ,but then,humans will have to learn new skills too
 
Artificial intelligence, in its purest form, is simply an LLM model that attempts to guess the next word based on probabilities. Undoubtedly, thanks to the amount of information it has received, it's already quite good at this. But it certainly won't be able to replace human capabilities anytime soon. If you've ever worked with vibe coding, you might have noticed that the code itself is often cumbersome, and in reality, any good developer can handle this task better. Without a basic understanding of programming, and if you encounter an error in the AI code, you won't be able to fix it yourself, and it will generally take a significant amount of time even for a good developer.

As for other fields, read the research: people trust human-generated advertising more than AI. And excessive use of AI and process optimization leads to increased workload, which ultimately leads to burnout.

To summarize: AI is undoubtedly a useful tool, but it cannot replace good employees.
 
I feel like it’s less about replacement and more about evolution. Developers aren’t useless....they just need to focus on designing systems, automations, and problem-solving instead of hand-coding everything. The gap is widening between people who adapt to new tools quickly and those who cling to static skills.
 
I think it's more about evolving than being replaced. Technology is automating tasks, but human creativity, strategic thinking, and problem-solving remain irreplaceable. Developers might shift roles, focusing on automation, system design, and innovation, rather than traditional coding. As tools evolve, the emphasis is on adapting quickly and leveraging systems efficiently, not abandoning core skills.

Well I will share my experience, I was looking for a dev a couple of days ago for build me a customized bot with super simple set up and a couple of them contacted me asking over 500$ which is ridiculous since the bot I was looking for was literally free on github and I asked just for a small modification, and said this I feel that dev are necessary for every online agency even with the presence of AI but most of them are greedy and overpricing their work.
 
It is equally important to adapt new changes. AI have a lot of impact in last couple of years.

We are going to become just the layer of orchestration and making sure stuff does not break when it should work this career will transition a lot and there will be less and less developers needed.
 
Definitely, I think there will still be space for them but they need to utilise AI tools more than others to stay relevant
 
I think there would be new work on adding on AI. Not all the time Ai is correct :)
 
devs aren't dying, they're just becoming system architects who fix what ai breaks, so learn to prompt or get left behind.

Lawyers and legal execs are very hard to replace. Would you trust a bot to win your case? I don't. I also agree with you that sales is the safest profession though.

An AI model would eat the bar exam these days, if it was fed properly

let alone the future
 
I think what's happening is the elimination of the most basic work. Current tools allow for rapid development, but when something deviates from the standard, you still need someone who truly understands how everything works underneath. What's changing is the type of value; for example, less writing code and more designing systems, integrating tools, and solving real-world problems.

Let's just say that those of us who don't evolve will be left behind, while those who do will logically be worth more than before.
