I am using SEO from Yoast and it asks me to add meta description.
Are meta descriptions important for SEO ? Does google read them ?

Not a factor for SEO but important for better description in search engine results, usually you want to have nice description of the page. If you don't set it google will fetch first text that he finds on the page, for example Menu items, part of the text from the page, sometimes even text from footer.

sometimes even when one is set... it still fetches the bloody menu.
 
I hardly use it myself, if you choose the correct schema and you setup your posts and pages properly it should easily pull a snippet that is decent = more time to work on other stuff if you ask me. Proper page layout and use of H tags and good markup saves you loads of time. Especially if you are working on very large sites.
 
Yes, Yoast just adds it for higher CTR but it doesn't REALLY affect rankings. But I would recommend it though.
 
Meta tags helps SEO. But not all of them and not all of the time.These are important in gaining user click-through from SERPs. It is important that meta descriptions on each page be unique.The description should optimally be between 150-160 characters.

Google's algorithm you can never be sure they might consider it or might not I suggest add them anyway even if they don't consider it good description adds to the CTR as explained above

I total agree with you! for most of the other replies, don't be surprised if you have problems to get your website ranked.
 
The content of the meta description tag helps the user decide which link to click from among the various choices.
 
of course its necessary,if your site do not have one perfect description,how google does allow them to be on good rank?
 
In SEO, meta description tag is not a ranking factor. But, extremely important in gaining user click-through from search engine result.

The description should be between 150-160 characters. These short paragraphs are a webmaster?s opportunity to advertise content to searchers and to let them know what information exactly they're looking for on that page.

So, Yoast is right.
 
Meta description is more impartent thing for to increase CTRbut the content must be in unique
 
As said before... with so much information and so many seo guru and articles many of us forget to think for themselves...
