It is not illegal but it is against their TOS. If for some reason your site gets popular, IG will try to take it down through multiple means.
automation is not against the law. if that was the case, all social media sites would cease to operate since they themselves use automation on us. they just do not want us to use it on their sites.

With something that is a grey area, sometimes being threatened by a large company with limitless funds and a big legal department from within your legal jurisdiction can be enough to roll over, close down, give in all their demands, turn over your customer records, give full access / control to infrastructure whatever they demanded in their Cease and Desist.
I doubt anyone here would want to go against facebook in a US court.
Doesn't mean what you were doing was illegal though. Just you were outgunned

@op if you are seriously concerned, do not listen to anyone on a random internet forum, where 99% have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. No one here is giving you legal advice. Go pay and speak to a lawyer and they can tell what the situation is for your area and what the risks are if facebook come knocking at your door

Not illegal, just against their T+C which means they can sue you if they want, if you cause them too much trouble they probably will too (Facebook used to send lawyers called Perkins Coie after you)

If you read the Instagram TOS Instagram Help Center General conditions #10 it clearly says “We prohibit. otherwise accessing any content on the Service via automated means”.
They will not sue you for violating this, you will not end up in jail or so. But they can cancel/ban/delete your account.
Many people use automation to grow their accounts. If you stay within the limits the risks are small. But bad things can happen if you or the service you pay for are not careful.
