Five good reasons to stay in college (apart from the "social status")

1 College girls
2 You can make friends for life
3 College girls
4 College girls
5 College girls

I recently graduated from university with a 3.8 GPA. I wouldn't say those are flying colors, but it's good enough to get me into whatever program I might want to do next. I actually enjoy being in school and if I had the money, I'd be a full-time student for the rest of my life (just sitting back and collecting degrees haha).

Other than a couple days before each midterm or final, there is very little work to do in university (maybe a few hours here and there for an assignment). I know many people take their education more seriously and study daily but I never found the need to. Simply put, while in university I had more time to work on IM than I have since.

Both IM and learning are my passions and that's a great combination. As jazz said, learning how to learn is the main thing you learn in university and it's helped immensely in many aspects of my life.

I've finished 60% of my BSc in computer science. I took one year off cause it was too just studying, and I'm having a hard time going back now.. I think I'm going back to uni next semester.

I've done 60%, it'd be stupid of me throwing it away..

So I've been thinking how many of us IMers have actually attended college and graduated with flying colors? The reason I'm asking, is that I continously keep struggling at college because I just don't have the motivation. From where I come from, in order to have an opportunity to get even a semi-decent job, you need to be a college graduate.

If you're not, you're pretty much done. The problem is, knowing that I'm currently spending 5 years in my life in college, struggling, just to graduate and gain this "social respect" and possibly a job, isn't enough motivation for me at all, simply because the "dream job" of a good graduate from my college would pretty much pay a quarter of what I do in IM.

My parents use to say oh you're good with computers and all, go to the faculty of engineering, computer science! Now I'm there, and I'm thinking, this is not where I'm supposed to be..lol.

So how do you guys see attending college? Did you go to college / graduate? If yes, did you go because it's some kind of a "social requirement" or just because you wanted to? And how do you manage your IM career with it and set the priorities?

Let me know your thoughts.

From personal experience .... my time at college was a waste of time !!! Get an MBA .... learned nothing I didn't already know .

If I had to do it over again ; I would spend time learning PhP and html . It would have been more useful than that useless degree !!! But again ; I always worked for my selves ... I don't like having a boss .

Lmfao Why did you -rep me? :/

I would neg rep you as well if i could.

school is freakig hard, and weakest people quite, cuz they cant handle it, but not all of course, if they have dreams, and goal and they need to drop out its cool, like Steve Jobs did. But if you drop out because you dont wanna do homeworks exams and cant handle it, you are weak.

atm i have so much to do at school, that you cant imagine, i want to drop out, because i know i can make it and graduate, thats all. People who are in school arent weak.

University = For Entertainment Purpose Only.
I only enjoyed going to university to get little social :P

I've always found school painfully boring, but I used to go out on college nights with mates.

Then in reality it isnt, no genious would ask for spoon fed methods like you do in every thread. If you are genius , then im elephant.

Why were you glad? Have you made use of its knowledge? Landed a job? Or just makes you feel better? I'm trying to find anything to hang on to so that I would keep going.

I did geology at uni so I don't use any of that knowledge specifically with what I do now as such but you are still learning regardless of what you study. The reason I say I am glad is because I believed I learnt quite a bit whist at uni and having a degree is a nice fall back. I think not having a degree now is too risky as it is much harder to find a job without one rightly or wrongly and if you are already part way through, you may as well continue.

If you are looking for an answer to justify the 30k or so you will probably pay to get one, you are probably not going to find especially if you are planning to go into IM afterwards. You will probably find plenty of people who have dropped out and still done well and likewise those who dropped out and regretted it.

I never asked to be spoon fed :O I only asked people to guide me in a right direction :)

I graduated from college and soon am going to finish my Master's Degree in Science. And still I love IM, Im not doing it full-time though. I dont think school is boring, it opens your mind about the society and well its always good to have something to fall back on. Btw I didnt have to pay for the tuition fee so I understand others who dont think highly of universities.

Sorry I can't motivate you as I dropped out of high school. That being said, I own several businesses and I generally make more money that anyone else in my family..

The most important thing I learned from my university years was how to learn. The subject was "hard" and that made us build gradually the ability to properly analyze an unknown problem and figure out the steps to tackle it.

I like the way you put that together! its not about the college degree really its about the individual.

College does help but if the individual is not motivated there will be no results.

I got a 4.0 in college Computer Information Systems with a Concentration in Analysis and Integration. But with no experience it doesn't mean squat i got my degree back in 2009 by 2011 and I already found myself struggling and looking for other means of income and great debt college puts you in is even more strain financially.

I am just getting into IM really as you can see I joined this forum in 2011 during that struggle and quitting a IT job at Comcast and my suggestion is if you are already banking with IM.... Screw College its nothing but a title that really means nothing. If you can make it in IM you can build a business which is more credibility than some paper saying you can read a book and reiterate some steps.

The experience and the journey of college I must say tho.. was VERY MUCH WORTH IT!

I went to college for 3 semesters. By the time the 3rd semester came, I knew I was wasting my time. I was losing money by going to class (by missing out on working on my Internet ventures, as well as by paying for the classes themselves).

College is NOT for everybody, and college is NOT required to be successful.

Long story short, I didn't get the grades to get into University. My plan was to go to London and study video game programming.

Knowing I wasn't going to Uni and had shitty grades, at 18 I had two choices... 1) Get a job at a super market / mcdonalds ... 2) Become a full time freelance web developer.

After a couple weeks I had no leads as there was no way I could compete with the bigger fish in my city or much cheaper indian coders. I tried to get a young persons business loan, but was denied. So I signed up to the government unemployment benefits and used that money each week for 3 months to pay for adwords and various other advertising methods.

After that it was plain sailing, I landed some huge clients, built up a name for myself and got tonnes of work from word of mouth.

At only 20 I was earning more than most uni graduates and was living a hugely improved social / party lifestyle compared to those in uni. Things have only grown since then.

One of my closet friends also didn't make it into uni. He has one of the highest earning websites out of my small IM friendship group and is in the beginning stages of setting up a huge business.

Majority of people I know who did go to uni I don't see that often because "I have no money" or "I haven't been paid yet" .... They either work in bars or are on other minimum wage part time jobs.

From what I've seen more often than not a uni degrees don't go hand in hand with huge ambition.

Motivation and persistence equals wealth and success. Not any academic qualification.
