Are Articles worth it for the links?

I truly believe that if you made a comparison between a link from an unrelated site/blog with a PR of say 2 and your anchor text was "Snow boots", and you wrote a snow boot article (PR=0) with a link to your site and "Snow boots" anchor text that the link from the article would carry more "juice" simply because it's surrounded by content relevant to your anchor text. I would also include "snow boots" in the title, so the URL of the article would have "snow boots" in it too.

My opinion - Google recognises the article directories, and knows that anyone who can write a passable article can get a link from these directories. They are quite an open source of links.

They're just not going to credit these links very highly, due to ease of acquisition.

Add to this the obvious and much repeated fact that no backlink below PR7 is worth a 450 word quality article's worth of work.

For driving traffic, however, articles are excellent.
 
Let's put it this way - I think Google knows it's an article website (as you suggest) and that some quality article websites don't accept any piece of crud article - it needs to be well written and the links that normally are included are for the same niche. So chances are the person who wrote the article knows something about the subject and more can be found at that website (just follow the link). On the other hand there are PR 4 blog sites that have Ugg boots, Ugg boots, tiffany jewelry, tiffany necklace etc ad-nauseum as posts and links - which do you think Google will give more credence to? My vote is for the article links.
 
Articles are definately worth it because search engines recognise them as a good source of information and think that if you can write an article you should have a good site.
 
You can use article directories or other web 2.0 sites to basically take over an entire page or two of low competition search results. Me and some other guy are in a search ranking battle right now for some very low competition searches and that's one thing we're doing.

It used to be just a bunch of spammy crap in the search results (not really all that different now except it's ours instead of other peoples) and now it's just a bunch of articles we've submitted and web 2.0 sites as well as some domains we own and put site up on. Pretty much a giant waste of time for me because it's not something I'm monetizing, I just want to defend the first website I ever built.

You are forgetting that articles will get you tons of exposure across the net. If you're articles are decent, people will take them and use them on their own sites, etc.

Out of all the traffic and backlink methods out there, article marketing is one of the very few that remains constant over all this time as far as traffic and backlinks go.
 
I think a more insteresting question - and one I'd like to know the answer too is the following:

Are 20 different articles (with backlinks to a website) to say ezinearticles (a site well respected by google) worth more in terms of PR and value than the same article posted to 20 different article websites (some with not such a high value in Google's eyes). Does the IP address of the articles come into play?
 
Here's what I noted lately on all this article submission and web 2.0 creation. I had a
PR2 squidoo lens, it had no backlinks but from squidoo. Suddenly this squidoo lens was buried to the grounds to N/A page rank value. Also, I had a blogspot blog, the squidoo lens was linking the blogspot blog so the squidoo lens passed PR to the blogspot blog. The blog had PR1, and it only had the squidoo lens as backlink. When the squidoo lens lose all its power (PR N/A) so the blogspot blog. Both showed the N/A indicator of page rank. So what is happening? No matter whether Google is indexing a site, if a this site or page has no external back links or has been buried to the deeps, they no pass more link juice. The same stuff happens for each article. Ezinearticles and the other article directories tend to bury all our articles to deep places. Moreover, Google is aware about all this open linking strategy. So this article submission worth nothing if we want the link from the article directory. However, a webmaster could syndicate your content along with the link, but that happen on fairy tale stories.
For backlinks article submission is not longer worthy.
 
About 1/3 of the linking I do for my sites is on article sites such as Ezine and my sites do pretty well. The way I see it is you get a link AND some direct referral traffic that is highly targeted.

Eza is extremely wonderful. Invest in the best spinner, write a nice article in 30 minutes and spend 30 minutes rewriting it

spin hundreds of articles from one seed article and use senuke or seolinkvine or isnare or BB or linkvana and submit your spin articles. You can interlink them to boost each other and one resource link to your site.

That way you can generate hundreds to thousands of backlinks all pointing to each other randomly and ALL of them pointing to your money site. As you know most directories allow 2-3 links in their resource box.

Also just to clarify; in ezine, you can put 4-5-6 anchor phrase keywords; just write longer. Do some homework to know how many words you need to put in a 6 anchor phrase keyword in ezine.

Using this simple method, it is so random and your backlinks plan is extremely powerful.

However most of the softwares, article directories service, 1 way backlinks cost $$ but it is good. 1 hour of your life without outsourcing you can generate thousands of backlinks which slowly adds.
 
Your doing everything right and everything wrong LOL. Using a Squidoo lens is a great way to pass on juice. However, the thing with a Squidoo is you have to constantly give is some TLC. The same goes with Hubpages. You just don't stop once you achieve the Juice Status. You will lose that juice if you don't add new content, links and so on. Look here for a great guide on how to build a powerful Squidoo lens http://www.squidoo.com/promote-a-lens. Remember that Web 2.0 properties are dynamic and the rule of thumb is "change." Keep them active and they will help you. Think of them like fish in a bowl. They need to be fed all the time! Bookmark them, Ping them, run RSS feeds and aggregate them, make comments on blogs and forums etc. linking to your blogs, send trackbacks and that neat SEO stuff!

It sounds like your sites either got slapped by Google, or maybe the dropped ranking because you stopped promoting them.

Articles do get syndicated more than you think if your articles are good enough. It's really not that hard to do and is definitely not a "fairy tale".

They are not the only source, but articles are definitely a good source for backlinks, traffic, and rankings and have consistently been so for years.

Never thought about that. In fact my lens have not been updated for a year nor promoted.

In fact, my real facts are doing great. I was talking about "the support sites" which provided backlinks to my real sites.
 
I would say that articles are definitely worth it to give your site authority and some power in the search engines. Although its news to me that ezine doesn't allow more than 3 words in the anchor text, that's unfortunate indeed.

spend more time reading the thread, I gave the answer on how you can put 4 5 6 phrase keywords in ezine :D

Which is why I never use those sites for anything long term. If I have an idea that I believe I can make a fast buck on, I'll use those guys but for long term link building, I don't bother with them.

What do you consider low competition? In terms of search volume, CPC, allintitle results, adwords KW tool search volume?
 
I published one article on ezine and my keyword has 35 mil+ results. My site was on 8th page and went to page 4 with one ezine article...

if your worried about the page rank of the ezine, then build links to it, and also it helps your new sites get indexed fast.

I'd prefer a backlink from an authority site like ezines then some bum ass no name blog...
