With AI-powered search results and tools like Google AI Overviews becoming more visible, it feels like traditional blue-link rankings aren’t the only visibility source anymore. Some sites seem to get mentioned by AI answers even without strong backlink profiles.

Do you think AI citations/mentions will eventually matter more than backlinks, or are backlinks still the foundation no matter how search evolves?

Backlinks aren’t going away, but they’re being demoted from the signal to just one of several trust inputs, while AI mentions will increasingly reward entities with clear topical authority and brand recognition even if their link profiles aren’t massive.

Backlinks are still the foundation because they establish base line trust and authority. What’s changing is how that authority gets surfaced. AI answers seem to lean heavily on brands and pages that are already trusted through links, mentions and user signals and even if those mentions are not always traditional do-follow links.

From what I’m seeing is the winning approach is combining both like solid backlinks to build authority, plus brand mentions, citations and also real visibility that AI systems can easily recognize and reuse. Backlinks aren’t dying , they’re just no longer the only signal that matters.

It's true. And for Gemini, it relies heavily on the authority of the site, in his eyes

Backlinks still set trust but AI mentions are clearly influencing visibility now. Feels like we’re moving toward brand/entity signals + citations not replacing links but stacking on top of them.

Google continually refines AI overviews based on user feedback, engagement signals, and real-world performance data. Because of this, we sometimes see low-quality or weakly linked sites appearing in AI answers, which doesn’t necessarily reflect stable or long-term ranking signals yet.

AI Overviews will almost certainly become more prominent over time, but they won’t replace backlinks entirely. Backlinks remain the core trust and authority signal for Google, especially for competitive and money-driven niches. AI visibility is more like an additional layer on top of traditional SEO, not a replacement.

Also, AI citations won’t work the same way across all niches. Informational and low-competition topics may benefit faster, while competitive niches will still rely heavily on strong backlinks, authority, and relevance. The future is likely a hybrid model, where backlinks build authority and AI visibility amplifies it.

AI citations are becoming crucial for brand visibility in AI answers, but traditional high-quality backlinks remain the foundation for domain authority and long-term rankings, as they signal trust to the core algorithm that powers both traditional and AI search results.

No doubt AI citations are gaining importance, but foundation links are still effective for domain authority and rankings

backlinks are still core foundation to present google that you are present there in the internet and other website's are signaling towards you.
however ai citations or mentions displays that you are related to various topics and shows the expertise of your brand/website to the topic you are targeting.

AI citations are becoming crucial for visibility in AI answers, but backlinks still matter for trust and rankings—smart SEO now needs both.

I see AI mentions as an extra layer rather than a replacement. Backlinks still seem to define trust, while AI visibility feels more about clear entities, topical authority, and well-structured content working together.

Backlinks are still the base but AI mentions are becoming an extra visibility layer for trusted, well structured content

AI citations are becoming an extra layer of visibility, not a replacement.
Backlinks still help search engines understand authority and trust, but AI systems seem to rely more on clear expertise, topical depth, and consistent brand mentions.

For now, backlinks are still the foundation — AI citations amplify strong sites, they don’t usually rescue weak ones.

If you don't rank, you won't appear in AI answers.
And you need links to rank.
