A while ago I had a taxi driver help me with bringing something I purchased home and carry it up the stairs. While driving home we were chatting, and something was said on the radio, about prisons or whatever, and he made like a noise, like pff, and anyway he told me he'd been in jail before. When we came in my place, he just opened my bedroom door, saw a bunch of computers. I told him yeah work stuff, but I'm gonna sell the computers because it's not really going well.

The other day I had 2 plumbers come over, and I could just smell the shit on them. Just totally suspicious dogs to me. Anyway they were only in the living room, but they did come in and look around.

Recently I had a kitchen installed, that's 3 dudes that came over a few time and stayed for a few hours. I like 2 of them were cool, the 3rd one the little guy was a bit suspicious. But this may just be me judging a book by its cover.

Anyway...

I live in an apartment and I'm starting to think about security. It's not like I have 100 bitcoins sitting in my closet, but, I have a pencil over on the table and I'd like it to stay on the table no matter what.

Now, when one thinks security I guess one thinks of cameras. But first of all, the camera won't help if a guy puts a sock on his head. The way a camera would help is to deter a thief, however, it could also invite a thief because if you're the only one with cameras in the entire building, block, city, then that may indicate you have something valuable you're trying to protect. So it's a double-edged sword. I guess the only camera that would make sense is a hidden camera, so that way if anything goes down and the thief doesn't know there are cameras he or she may not hide their face, and then you got em.

Next, the door. That's the big one. I guess there's 2 potential problems there.

First is having a door that's strong enough and mounted in a way to where the strongest man on earth couldn't break it if he kicked it and smashed it with a hammer 100,000 times. That goes for literally ripping a hole in the door, or breaking it off on the hinges, the screws where the door is screwed into the wall.

The second issue is the lock. Now this is fucked because a guy that knows how to open a door can open a door, right? I mean I guess you can go all modern and do some weird digital fingerprint shit, but that also looks out of place, and that can be hacked. But there's no need to be paranoid, it's not like we have 100 bitcoins here or that anyone is out to get us (as far as we know). But there has to be locks that a burglar can open in 2 minutes by sticking something in the lock and pressing a button, and locks that a burglar would have to camp in front of the door for 2 hours trying to get it just right to get it to open.

Then we have windows. I'm on the first floor, but pretty up high. However, if you really cared you could get a tall ladder and have your buddy hold it for you while you climb up. Now, 2 of my windows are just windows. There's like blinders, then the net for the bugs, and then the actual PVC windows. So let's say the blinder is closed. You'd have to pick it up, and it's heavy. The net for the bugs is locked from the inside, but a strong push would probably rip out the plastics that hold it in place and get it to open, and once it opens it rolls up and stays open. And now you have the window. So the consideration here is, is the glass strong enough to prevent someone breaking it by hitting it with whatever. The second consideration is, would someone who knows windows somehow be able to open it from the outside. You know, break the plastic here, unscrew this screw here, move this little metal thing here, bada bing, bada boom, window opens.

Then there's the balcony. That's worse because once you're up there you're not standing on a ladder risking a fall that could break multiple bones in your body or even kill you. Now you're looking at the balcony door, and 1 window which is comfortably large enough for you to go through, if you can open it. Let's say the blinders are closed, you pick them up and hold them up. You rip up the net. And now it's just a matter of either breaking the glass, or kicking the window in by brute force, or opening it "intelligently" by unscrewing shit and whatnot. Here we're still talking windows and glass like before, except now you're standing on the blacony and can kick and hit and break things and work more easily to try and enter. One thing that I saw a neighbor has like glass that he can close the balcony with. I like that because it would make it harder for anyone to get on the balcony, but also for other reasons, like protection from rain and snow if clothes are drying on the balcony etc.

I'm not gonna talk about someone kidnapping you or waiting outside of your door to smack you over the head as you're exiting your place. That's a consideration, but that goes to gyms muscles knives guns pepper sprays zappers etc, and I'm not quite there yet. So let's leave that out of this...

I wasn't planning on writing such a long thread when I started writing, it just sort of got away from me :D

So what do you guys think about all this? Like, I guess one could call a security company and throw all these doubts at them, and get them to check everything and alleviate your doubts and concerns. However, it's like if you get a builder to build you a secret compartment in your house or an exit tunnel. You gotta kill the motherfucker when he's done, because no one can know. Well, if a security company installs the shit for you, they'll know, and we can't have that, we're not in the murder business.

So I guess the best way is to figure it all out yourself and install everything yourself. I mean you don't have to install it yourself, you can have a guy install your door for you. But he won't necessarily know your door is reinforced titanium whatever bla bla unbreakable stardust type door that will still be standing even if the building collapses. He's just installing a door for you. Or if you change the lock and you call a guy to do it. He's just installing a lock, he doesn't know it would take 10 super computers and team of scientists working around the clock for 3 days in order to open it without a key. You see where I'm going with this.

So anyway, the thread just keeps going, so I'm gonna stop now. Give me what you got?

That's a long winded way of saying "I need a gun" :anyway:

Yeah well, yes and no.

First of all, guns are illegal where I live, and getting one is a long process, and I hate long processes!

Second of all, unless the gun can shoot at people on its own when I'm not home, it won't offer me the full protection that I require... desire...

Get a dog :)
A good companion that will motivate you to stay fit aswell

assuming your apartment allows pets

My apartment is mine, it allows anything I want it to allow!

That said...

First of all, a dog costs time and money, and emotional pain if and when something bad happens to it. I have none of the 3 to spare.

Second of all, a dog can be poisoned, shot, stabbed, and kicked to death.

Third of all, dogs bark, and I don't much like constant noises.

Fourth of all, not any little dog would offer protection. You'd need a killer dog. And a dog is an animal, and every once in a while the dog may just, you know, get brain damage and turn on you, his owner, and fucking kill you!

And fifth of all, what if you get the biggest baddest most murderous dog in the world, and the dog just happens to like the smell of your thief and makes friends with him? What if your thief owns a dog, and your dog smells the female dog on your thief and tries to fuck him instead of ripping his face apart?

No no no, a dog won't do it. I gave you a list of reasons why :)

The best apartment security is.. chihuahua !

Seriously.. these little breeds make so much noise... that even if you are dead you will hear them.

As for me.. I have 2 trained Male European Dobermans and I stay with unlocked doors :) Anyone is more than welcome :D

" get brain damage and turn on you, his owner, and fucking kill you" - I like myths .. there is only one single reason a dog to turn against its owner and is not brain related :)

And fifth of all, what if you get the biggest baddest most murderous dog in the world, and the dog just happens to like the smell of your thief and makes friends with him? -- You need to spend at least 6 months for proper training.. then you won't have such issues :)

dogs are alot more loyal than you think
if they ain't, 9 out 10 times, it's the owners fault :)
dogs do alot more than just "bark", yes sometimes they are annoying as hell, but once again, depends on the breed, it may even attack any trespasser it deems dangerous.
if we are talking about being poisoned shot stabbed and kicked to death, you probably should move places if those things are hanging over your head.

Yes, dog is a hugeeeee physical & mental investment, time money and emotional pain comes along with it along with 1000 other things such as learning how to take care of it, feeding it and adjusting your lifestyle with it.
However, strangers think twice about breaking into a property when they hear a dog's barking more than seeing lots of "security cameras".
At least where I live, security cameras does fuck all, people in my neighbourhood gets robbed on a monthly basis and everyone and their mothers have security cameras.
The only houses so far in my neighbourhood that has not been robbed are the ones with dogs.

haha :D

I'm gonna be serious.

I'll get 2 pieces of red meat, or whatever the fuck dogs eat, and I'll lace them with poison. Your dobermans will be dead (rip) within the hour. And with your unlocked doors, I'll be seeing you real soon :)

You have never see trained dogs I guess :) Good luck giving something to my dogs :) It worth taking a look over here https://www.protectiondogs.co.uk/dogs-category/dobermans-dogs-for-sale/

You see.. is not enough to take a dog.. (i guess you missed the edited post) you have to train that dog in order to become discipline and a real killing machine :)

Now .. as I said.. a combination of chihuahua and doberman is better because dobe's are pretty silent :D

Other than that.. just get a wife :D

Yeah, well, I already gave my reasons why a dog won't work for me.

But on your point about if a dog ain't loyal it's the owners fault. Why would I wanna put my faith in something where I can be blamed for the downfall. Because with a dog we're not talking about forgetting to lock your door. With a dog we're talking about vague-ish behavior, like being dominant, but not too dominant, not showing fear, whatever it may be, and then your dog picks up on your emotional state and magic happens or whatever.

This is too vague for me. I need, you know, I don't know, bulletproof glass and reinforced steel and, you know, science.

I feel you, okay. But it's must easier for me to install a door that would survive a nuclear bomb than to train a dog. No comparison.

And also, I don't really want a killing machine in my home, unless it's one that I control, like a gun. At the end of the day an animal is an animal and it will do what an animal does. I can't bet my life and property on the whims and wishes of an animal.

Love animals, love dogs, love cats, they're great, but I have to use my flawless logic on this :D

Then.. my advise will work..

GET A WIFE :D

Yeah, haha, maybe.

But that's like putting half of my shit in the hands of a potential thief.

Shit, even more than half of my shit. We marry, we divorce, she takes half my shit and I have to pay alimoney for the little bastard we spawned together, plus I have to pay for lawyer fees during the divorce which are most likely substantial.

That's more than half my shit, bitch!!!

I think I'm better off leaving my door wide open and inviting the thieves in. I don't think they can't carry more than my ex-wife and her lawyer can hahaha :D

Mate you gotta be creative with this one. Cameras can be tricked, alarm systems too. I know as I did it for a living for some time (testing security systems). IMHO if you live alone you should try to reinforce your apartment physically. Make risk assessments based on your neighbourhood. Again, most likely you will be looking out for some low level crook with crowbar looking for easy money.

Go for 2-step way.

1st step: Reinforced doors made by one company and installed by another. Still bars on windows. CCTV and some loud ass alarm system that'll wake up few surrounding counties just as a deterrent
2nd step: Reinforce additionally your computer room so if someone gets in should be surprised by another layer of security. Maybe hide this room with special security door. Seal the windows. Shut them completely with bricks/concrete.

This is just a my two cents on this matter but this will not stop creative thief to break in. They are looking for weakest spots like we do here. Your door can be the strongest one in the world but if wall beside them can be brought down by a single hammer hit they will do nothing good except to give you false sense of security.

If thief decides that he needs 1k to invest to get into your apartment and that it'll get him 10x more he will do it.

Get a boa as your pet. Let everyone know that you have one.
Most people fear snakes.

I'd think whether you're living like a castaway in a place without people also matters. No people, no crime. :)

> Question 0 - What kind of work do you do? - Some work can be done remotely in a safer city

>Question 1 - What city do you live in ? - Big cities are bad - Small towns are better - College towns are best

>Question 2 - What PART of that city do you live in. A ghetto is different from an industrial area which is different from a gated community

>Question 3 - How far is your apartment from your job (how far do you commute?) Longer commute might be from a safer area

>Question 4 - How much do you pay for rent? Safer areas might only be a little more expensive that where you live. Check the prices every few months.

Question 0 - There is a difference between a career and a job. Can you easily move or continue your career - Maybe you are living in the
wrong state or city or area of the city. Never think you are stuck somewhere.

Question 1 - Some cities are garbage, however a short commute away is totally nice, in the country
less expensive and safer

Question 4 - If you have a good salary and pay rent, MANY TIMES it is better to move away from
the unsafe area and buy a house in the country. Go to a mortgage site and compare your rent
with what it could buy in the way of a house. OR buy a small lot and put a manufactured house or
tiny home on it. Cheaper. Safer. You own it.

Remember that the 3 ways to always build wealth (throughout history) have been Real Estate, Farming and Mining.

Real Estate is the easiest.
