I was paying $1750/month in rent while there but I had a really nice place, and then spending $800/month in electricity (my place was an icebox 24/7, all A/C on max).

You can buy a small box (1 bedroom) for $119k, the decent places start around $200k - $300k.

Its more of a sort of stereotypical breed of person. It is typically the retired couple that basically lives life as they would in the US but is there for the currency difference, the tropical temperature and bragging rights :)

It is not at all that all people do it that way, but suburbs of ex-pats tend to spring up in US friendly countries and that's what I was trying to say; if you're looking online those tend to be the places you find as they're the ones that actually have US real estate agents doing the listings and showing the places and once you get there you'll find you can pay considerably less and live somewhere just as nice.

I've noticed that alot of urban places are generally the same when it comes to modern culture. But the differences in older generations and rural places are much greater. The internet is allowing people to actually pick and choose their own subculture. Before our generation no one could watch live tv from overseas or listen to music from overseas,and communicate easily with people from all over the world.

You can do both. I worked a 9-5 and did IM at the same time until my IM income was high enough to quit my job.

You can do this by getting rid of useless distractions in your life like silly hobbies, irrelevant friends, Facebook, Twitter, relationship dramas and anything else you do in your spare time that does not make you money and use that to do IM ONLY. You will need to sacrifice some things to make it in this game.

Yea that's what I've slowly been doing. Deactivated my facebook and quit a forum I frequented last week. Right now I'm just looking into web development. Going to try and understand wordpress then get into SEO.

Growing up I went to Disney World every year (probably 7-8 times) but its been about a decade since the last time; this could be the excuse I need!
 
Micky Mouse sent me an email asking where you have been.

Just before Thanksgiving things are super slow down there and that might not be a bad idea. My wife and I have annual passes to Sea World and usually spend our Thanksgiving down in that neck of the woods.

I'll open a new thread in the next couple of days and maybe we can set up something definitive.

I have no issue laying out a few dollars for a venue if we work something out.

:'( .. All this talk of Orlando is making me sad!! I miss that place so much! I am trying to persuade my friends to come with me, but not many can afford it! Even though you can rent a 10 birth villa for around $1000
 
Google for "the Real Costa Rica". That website helped me the most when I went to CS last summer.
 
i have done what your thinking of doing for many years in s.america. if you have any questions related to countries pm me. as far as i'm concerned that is the only reason to im for a living. computers are boring, but s. america is not.

in the countries i have taught, the school recommends that no native language be spoken - just english. in fact, i have never been asked for a tefl - when they see you are a native speaker they are satisfied.

the hard part is coming up with fun lectures, but you can buy courses for that and they will serve you better than a cert. but usually before long most the teachers just open up their own school out of there house.

in these countries their is a degree of common sense, if you speak good english you are not required to have a certificate from xyz saying that you speak good english, where-as in the u.s. if you were a native spanish speaker you would still need a plethora of certificates stating the same as well as a background check probably.
