Ive been wanting to start up my own Bar, specifically a cocktail bar.

I havnt really looked into it that much, so just wondering if anyone here own a bar? whats it like, how hard etc etc

I go to a bar quite often. :) Most of the bar owners I know spend a lot of time in their establishment. Make sure you get some good insurance, because it is a crazy ball game here.

Supermatt theres tons of things you need to know when opening a bar. What state are you from?

Actually im in the UK. London.

Im not really planning on opening one any time soon but just intrested as its something I WOULD like to do :)

Ive had one bar for over ten years and a couple others for shorter times. They flip really well just like websites. And yes fear91, I only hire cute girls to bartend, and even went so far as to have them in schoolgirl skirts and black tank tops at one time. I find it's very similar to IM in that you have to test and retest. What worked today, won't work tomorrow. And you need to be organized and put best practices into place. We weigh the liquor and count the beers everyday and compare against POS. If you have any questions either ask here (so everbody can see) or PM. I'd be happy to help. I even registered newbarowner.com awhile back intending to throw something together for folks that might have questions, then throw some ad$ense and clickb$nk on it and see what happens. Maybe a forum... Hey I need to work on that some more . LOL

Dude...building a bar in London? That will cost you hell of a lot. Unless your planning to build it on the very outskirts :D

But if you did get it near the centre, best thing to do is to make it posh, so you get all the rich people coming.

You should work on that... the adsense ads on that site will pay very well as long as you get the ads to post about business, starting a business, opening a business etc.

I have a site that talks about starting a business and the adsense on it does real well.

Your absolutely right Basstracker, cause i also registered some really great domains on bartending classes, and bar t-shirts and the like, maybe 5 or 6 in total all with pretty good traffic as I remember. Just got sidetracked and put it on the backburner. Anyway, while I have a chance, let me say thanks for all of the amazing posts I see from you all over BHW, it's people like you that keep this site going. There are tons of NOOBs like me that count on you.

depends where you live.

for example, portland oregon you can open a bar in almost a day the licensing is simple whereas in vancouver, canada you can only buy a pre-existing license for around $500k-1million minimum, or lease the license for outrageous price.

UK i thought they had a limit on pubs, i'm guessing that drives the prices up to ridiculous levels only mafia can afford

I dont have a bar per say.
I do have a wife and a fridge full of piss which sort of works like a bar.
(far cheaper and you can smoke while drinkin :) )
I will leave now before i get into trouble.

research the demographics in the local area and see what types of people other bars in the area are targeting. try to find a profitable niche with enough traffic and low competition. (same principles as IM really).

if you can get a location right next to a hotel or apartment complex or airport, you'll be all set for getting tons of free traffic. :)

Everyone I know that has been in the bar business is either trying to get out of it or glad they did except for two out of about 25. The only reason one is still in it is because he makes money hand over fist from the casino located in it and the other has been in their family for a generation or two so they don't want to let go of it.

I would try to find somewhere cheap that you would be able to test it out and see if you really like it, I guess bars around here sell for a lot more because of the cost of a liquor license and of what it has to do with gambling, not hard to find a liquor license going for over a million $$$ + around here, not counting the real estate.
