Because I have questions about the subs you're moderating and I'm assuming most mods wouldn't want to post this information on the thread for the whole world to see...

Are you ok to name the subreddits that you currently moderate?

You can ask question without knowing the subreddit in question. Your request is too vague.

I'm all for it; if you check out my post history you can see that I try to share as much information as I can with Reddit beginners... That's one of the reasons I like this community so much.
I'm just trying to figure out the best way for me to get my foot in the door for moderation purposes, have had some success before but haven't been able to moderate any community with more than 2000 members. How many members does the largest community you moderate have, what's the niche? Did you start it yourself from scratch, get invited to co-moderate, request an abandoned subreddit etc.? It would be great if you can explain how you started and how you grew your community.

I'm not the best person to grow reddit communities, I think I couldn't done a better job.
* My communite is 10k.
* Finance niche, OK, I know it's not the most popular niche on reddit.
* I requested it, it was set up in 2008 and stayed idle for more than 10 years.
* I started growing the community by posting myself... now, I don't have time for it so I barely post myself and that's why it's been growing slowly. With reddit you have to fake it till you make it.

I've requested abandoned subreddits with ~5k members before but was denied because I didn't have experience moderating a subreddit with that many members. How many members did your subreddit have when you requested it? And what was your most effective way of growing? I've tried to grow by posting good content and trying to crosspost on larger subreddits in a similar niche but sometimes larger subreddit's don't accept crossposts and some require moderator approval for crossposts which never happens.
Does reddit promote your posts to r/all or r/popular if they get any traction within your community?

It seems to me that this "subreddit request" thing is so random and you need to apply and re-apply till they agree. I was denied a few times myself so you need to keep on trying.
When I requested it, there were about 2k members and since it was inactive for such a long time those members were useless.
As I mentioned in the previous post, my niche is not very popular on reddit so it takes longer to grow it.
Some of my mistakes and lessons growing it:
* Needless to say... Do not spam. Some people get subreddits an then start spamming them with their affiliate links and then wonder why they get banned, spamming is not the way forward there.
* Posting decent content on your subreddit helps to grow it. Just create a few more accounts and post from them. I have 3 reddit accounts on my home IP, 2 accounts as mods, 1 for posting. Sometimes, I post as an automod. Once again, posting really helps as long as you don't spam your subreddit.
* Crossposting: in the beginning I was doing crossposting and I didn't have much success there and it wasn't worth my time so I rarely crosspost nowadays. OK, agree with you that some mods delete crossposts, some don't allow crossposts at all, and some don't allow links. What I did? I created a spreadsheet where I tested over 50 subreddits to crosspost on and then made notes so now I only crossposts on the subs where my posts will stick. So crossposting takes some time to set up at first but once you know where your posts will stick it takes about 15 mins/post to crossposts.
* I don't think reddit ever promoted my posts but I said my niche is not really for reddit.

Wow that's amazing, are you the sole moderator or are you a part of a team. Are these subreddits that you started from scratch or did you join as a moderator later on? What niches are the subreddit's in?

Agree that redditrequest is random. Just keep trying. I randomly get thrown a bone from there every now and again.
