trying to start up my first blog, just purchased my domain and trying to figure out where to park. can someone shout some ideas out my way?

Depends of how many visitors do you have. Its not he same if you have 0-200 a day and 1000-10000 a day.
I am always against shared hosting, if you know your way around VPS I suggest you get one and have bigger control and you don't need to share your IP with 100 or 1000 of others people and also you will have a faster site/blog.

It depends, it's as wizard04 said.. I've been with http://www.servinio.com for two years for some of my sites without any issue at all, amazing support, even better than most big companies I've been with for the last decade.

blogger. it is the google blog service. Awesome software, and cheap to buy your own domain

Depending on the type of resource you are using.

If wordpress 1-10k traffic, without using a lot of pages, you can get hosting $ 12 per year.

If traffic 1-15k with many pages, you can start hosting share to $ 10 per month.

You can see a lot of the hosting market.

Hawkhost passable

If you know how to manage a server, go with Digital Ocean. Very cheap and easily scalable.

If you are looking for stable hosting then i would suggest hostgator and byethost . No matter how unprofessional they look they still offer afordable plans

In my experience, HostGator sucks... They're just super famous. Some smaller guys are much better... Like HostNine, and ScalaHosting.

Bluehost, Hostgator, godaddy is the top10hosting and also had an Advanced optimized VPS WordPress plan!
