I was recently on Gizmodo checking something out and when I tried to back out of the website (hit backspace or click the back arrow key) I kept getting redirected back to the same webpage.

I was using google chrome. I this just me or are they running some sort of plugin, script or something else on their site? I could see how this would benefit the site, increased time spent on the site would be the first thing Do you guys have any idea of what this could be?

I'd post a link to the page but because of my "newbie" status I'm not allowed to post links. You guys can try it on any gizmodo page.

That happens to me all the time with different sites no matter what browser I use. Have no idea why it happens. I just x out the window.

It happens (you can't go back to the previous page by using the back-key on the main part of keyboard, the key that is next to the "\" key and above the "Return" key) if you click on a link and the link opens in a NEW tab.

It also happens when you duplicate an existing tab to another tab (you can do that by using a FF addon). Tested in Firefox.

If the clicked link opens another webpage in the SAME tab, then you can use the back-key to go back to the previous web page.

HTH

P.S.: Not tried in Chrome, but the "funda" should be the same, IMO.:)

Test this on any BHW page where you see an advert and some links (e.g., Thanks link by a member). Try clicking both, one at a time, the advert takes you to ANOTHER (NEW) tab, and from there you can't backtrack to the original page.

Then,
Try clicking a link in the Thanks section (on a member's name), the link opens the member's activity/profile page in the SAME tab, and you can also backtrack from there to the original page by using the back-key.

Kidding, but it Works!: You can thank a post on this page too! Then try both...:)

I was not opening the page on a new window or new browser. The back button within google chrome was "clickable". When I would click it I would just be redirected to the same page.
