Links are still powerful but make sure you don't just focus on backlinks. Engagement and user activity are also crucial.

Link building is useless and lots of risk involved. Better to concentrate on content, as long as you are giving best to your reader you will be able to catch big websites later.
I have practised it and it's work. My website is fairly doing awesome, with average session duration 4 minutes and bounce rate to 8%.
Another important part is when you work in improving quality of website, user engagement, better product quality to offer you create a best product for the long run.

Links are the most important factor in ranking your website, but be careful in the beginning if it's a new site.

Bottom line, there are no guides, because there isn't so much stuff that works anymore. There are a few basic types of backlinks and techniques that are working still perfectly fine:
- Expired/boosted web 2.0s will always be perfectly safe and provide perfect foundation
- Guest posts and manual outreach will always be a holy grail of SEO. Not only you will get a SEO benefits but also traffic. Requires work and can get expensive, but totally worth it.
- PBNs if you know what you are doing will always be a powerful method.
Rest is merely for anchor and link diversity, not really for any link juice.

The strategy is don't do anything Google is asking you to do, except for maintaining a clean, white-hat link profile.
I think @Diamond Damien should now consider making BHW a paid forums, whose data and content cannot be accessed by Google bots. Google is mining data from all sources, and although I love this forum as it is I think we should keep the SEO discussions off of all Google radars. Additionally, we also ought to make this forums membership "invite only" so as to make sure we lower the possibility of having Google spy on us with dummy accounts, plus making all inactive/less used accounts restricted from accessing the SEO talk section-- including both Black Hat SEO and Whitehat SEO forums.

You really thing that will even come close to slowing down/stopping google? Money talks, it would not be too hard for google to get a little help from a high ranking member or two on this "underground forum".
+ why would @Diamond Damien cut his good source of income in half?
Well dude, I am not expert like you when it's come to link building, so I would better prefer to have natural way of link building via creating authority in my niche through better offerings.
And its working for me slowly and steadily. And also I do believe when we concentrate on better user experience, we create better website.
Our website is just not a website it's a product and consumer relationship.
The idea of marketing is same as we do for local grocery shop that's not available on Internet. The better product creates social awareness, word to mouth publicity and trust of customers.
You are also right, you have aggressive and quick way of promoting products and services for the fastest result.

I admit you are correct to some extent. Still, working purely without any backlinks, especially even without whitehat-ish guest posts and natural outreach is only killing potential of your site. Getting penalized by outreach would require some really amazing (negatively) skills and without that, it will take ages until you achieve some decent traffic and income. Not to mention you can still be caught as fallout of some Penguin update or neg SEOed. The fact that you don't do linkbuilding doesn't make your site penalty-proof at all.

Why? Do you think Google can't afford to sign up for a membership?
The only way to stop Google finding out what you're doing to rank, is to stop talking about it on forums - or anywhere for that matter - you only need to tell 1 person and before long the whole world, including Google will know about it.
Then it won't work any more.

From my POV we are sharing info for years in order to find clues on how to rank better as none of us like a single webmaster does not have such a resources to test everything and that is why info is shared in general in public/private forums.

From my POV we are sharing info for years in order to find clues on how to rank better as none of us like a single webmaster does not have such a resources to test everything and that is why info is shared in general in public/private forums.
Things are changing rapidly. As much as I like the idea of open board discussions which is one of the best part of BHW, it cannot go on without Google catching up and plugging the loopholes. That's my personal opinion.
" Invitation Only" for certain section of the forum doesn't sound like a bad idea. Although it's not a foolproof plan, meaning Google can still spy into BH SEO talks the next alternative is NOT talk about on forums at all. Or, create Skype groups to talk with groups of people you trust. @littlewebdragon rightly pointed out single webmasters cannot afford to test every method, without wasting a lot of time and money.
@Diamond Damien can ignore this or take it up on war footing. As things stand a lot of folks feel clueless about what's next, feeling discourages, and are looking for direction. Even if a good percentage of those people stop visiting this forums he'd end up losing some money. Have you thought about that? Do you think anyone will risk talking about methods to rank, something that is really helping them rank their sites as openly as we did in the last 5 years?
