There's a free alternative i use on some of my wordpress websites:
Use a combination of "popup domination" plugin (see downloads section) and GWA Autoresponder plugin "hxxp://freeautoresponder.biz/"
I don't know if it's working for large lists but for small lists like mine it's working well.

Hmm.. I'm actually looking for an autoresponder too. I currently use Aweber and they demand I have my address in the email bottoms. Seems most "official" responders demand that?
I was hoping to find one that didn't require that (I'll just have an unsubscribe button at the bottom) and I could add to my list by fwding recieved emails to it and asking people to confirm they aren't bots (CL traffic). So a single optin, basically.
Any suggestions on what would work with that?

Some of the suggestions you received were good but just because it is free/cheap does not mean it is good. You need something that will inbox for you.
Are you selling anything that you own (processing payments)? If so, go with InfusionSoft. It's an all-in-one suite that most of the big (and small) guys use. I really like it and it has many methods to auto-responders and series that you can create. Give the free trial a demo.
If you are not selling anything (that you own), InfusionSoft may be a bit on the pricy side. On that note, go with Vertical Response. It has an easy to use Interface and the prices are some of the best. They inbox VERY well.
If you have a good quality list of customers that will not flag you as spam (even though they opted in), MailChimp will be good as long as you can stay below 1 complaint [message marked as spam] per 1000 sent. Most ESP's keep a .01% ratio.

MailChimp don't like affiliate marketing, and will ban your account if they find out.
ListWire isn't recommended because they advertise other clients offers to your mailing list
Constant Contact offer a 60 day trial, so I would go with that, and then if you like it, and are making money using it, you can continue with them. I think they charge 15/month for a basic package.

I've used http://www.madmimi.com in the past with good results. They also have a free account option, which isn't a trial that rebills at full price later. So you can test it as you want.

I've been using Trafficwave for my autoresponder for a while now. Its been working out great. It has unlimited subscribers, autoresponders, and deliver ability is good like aweber. Its $18 a month.

I'd be more interested in what has better inboxing rates. A cheap email service might be not reliable that major services like gmail will reject them.
I know that gmail trusts aweber and getresponse as I always get subscribing email to the inbox instantly with these.

Getresponse is the best alternative, but aweber is the best one placed just before any other programs. So, will recommend aweber.

We know that Aweber and Mailchimp like to terminate accounts if the spam rates get a little bit too high... are there any alternatives which are more liberal?

install Active Campaign or Interspire on it then add an smtp to it here is a good one http://sendgrid.com/pricing.html buy the bronze account for $9.95 for 40,000 emails sent out if you have 1k opt in you can send 40 times to them in a month LOL if you run out of credits buy another $9.95 or if you want them to maintain the ip rep then buy the gold,platinum or silver account.
