Been monitoring twitter closely and recent reports from sources close to it tell me that they are actually banning more accounts than accounts are being created. Something like 2-3M accounts banned.

A number of high follower count accounts were removed in the process. While bannings are constantly happening, some do seem to be coming in waves. Certain types of accounts all disappearing at the same time. IPs and interactions between accounts seem to be what a lot of the bans are based off of.

Most were permanent bans.

If you are marketing on twitter, be extra careful. Methods like: follow unfollow, recycling content may not work anymore.

My TIPS:
  • If you've grown a good account already, be as clean as possible.
  • If it's not making you much money, sell it. There's still value on it and if you keep trying to grow you risk getting banned
  • If you're just starting out on Twitter, I'd recommend doing Instagram. Facebook and Insta aren't exactly friendly but it's not like Twiter at least. Follow unfollow, liking, and some automation still work on Insta.
  • If you really want to do Twitter, growing from scratch is painfully hard. Buy an account. Before purchasing, study the account carefully. Are the accounts liking and RT'ing the posts legit? Or are they bots? Scroll through the followers. Are they legit? Or bots? Look at the history of the account. Ask questions. If the account has any red flags, there's a chance it could be blocked at some point
  • If you have a network of accounts, lay low on RT'ing/liking the same things for a little while. At least do it on a smaller scale or make it less obvious.
  • Group RT'ing and using a social media panel on twitter will be harder than ever so be careful if you plan to do it.
Possible ways this could play out:
  • Twitter is responding to a lot of negative PR about their bots. This could be a move to make themselves look good. It's possible that this ban wave will happen and in a year, things will be a bit better again. Who knows? Just keep an eye out.
  • Twitter's purge cuts out a lot of noise. This may be the best time in ages for real original and good accounts to shine. Timelines are less cluttered with junk. You may see some jumps in engagement if you survive the bans.
  • Twitter may continue to wield the ban hammer like crazy......and in which case.....I have a suit case packed. If the storm hits, I'm running.

Thank you @lalgsw for such post that puts forth awareness to the extreme. It pays to be careful online these days for your business' sake.

indeed. it pays to be cautious especially if twitter is a big part of your income right now

I agree! We need to think of our business staying and growing in the long term. It won't be worth losing it because of mismanaged social media marketing.

Just got one of my 100k accts banned for

Specifically, your account was found in violation of our rules prohibiting fake or artificial account interactions and engagements. As described in the Twitter Rules, this includes:

if you sell, purchase, or attempt to artificially inflate account interactions (such as followers, Retweets, likes, etc.); and
if you use or promote third-party services or apps that claim to get you more followers, Retweets, or likes (such as follower trains, sites promising "more followers fast", “decks” or other applications, services, or groups which artificially inflate the follower or engagement counts on Tweets and accounts).

I never bought or sold accounts but do have a "deck" of 5 or 6 accounts to cross retweet each other but seems like Twitter wants to kill decking all together even tho in their new TOS say that it's ok to cross retweet between a small number of accounts

also they locked all the accounts associated with the same phone number. So I'm going to have to separate the phone numbers on each account and change them so I'm not locked out the next time this happens

ouch :( yeah i got the same message on a few accounts that i had collaborate with each other. different phone numbers, but i guess because they cross promoted a lot, twitter caught them

welp seems like Twitter is confirmed banning "decked" accounts and traders. This is worse than the purge from a few years ago. @dory @girlposts went down. also some of the big players RayLopez and a few others went down as well. Going to have to lay low for a bit or figure out a new angle.

Twitter sucks worst social network ever they ask instant mobile verification after account creation

Twitter knows only a small group of people own these parody accounts and they're going after them hard. Thankfully i stopped trading awhile ago and chilled out with my accounts despite losing one 100k yest.

I wonder what kind of settings you guys have that your accounts keep getting banned? Im running on low settings for almost a year and never had a problem. I get the usual sms and captcha verifications which is fine.

I don't follow/unfollow and I've never gotten any captcha verifications. I "deck" my own accounts and this just came out of nowhere and is clearly part of a new policy.

Do you do rt/favorite/postings?

Hmm, maybe it's a good time to stop the automation for awhile or set it to ultra low settings.

I'll probably post one or two things per account per day or less and then cross retweet it from my other accounts. Thankfully I use original contentt, and only lost one acct doesn't seem like ppl who used recycled stuff fared too well today but yeh looks like the days of "decking" are over.

Edit..// This all happened a month after that Buzzfeed article on Decking came out. (most of the guys written about it in that article are now banned)

those particular accounts were "decking" or using tweet deck to mass promote certain posts. others were "trading" posts with each other. and then it looks like they used IP and past interactions to catch other accounts. if you have an account that's just slowly doing basic automation it may be ok.

Seems like trading is fine for now but "Decking" might be over. also it looks like they went after people with unoriginal content @Dory @Girlpostings . I got most of my accounts unlocked but it seems like they permanently banned that one 100k account, I was raking it in with both facebook and twitter so all these changes suck but I've been doing IM for nearly 10 years now and know that I have to be consistently on the move and one step of ahead of these social media sites.

i never decked but i lost a few accounts that were doing small scale trading. could have been for other reasons though

twitter sucks nowadays you just create a new account they locked it so fast

How can decking be "over" when Twitter owns Tweet Deck and encourages people to use it? lol
