Look for things that allow you to mix in A LOT of keywords. Try to include 40 - 50% garbage keywords like click here, read this article, home page, etc...

Be very cautious of signing up for private blog networks. Make sure there are A LOT of quality controls in place.

Look for offers that have a good mix of diversity in types of backlinks and class c diversity as well.
 
It's a little overwhelming to see all that you have to do to get high rankings. Speaking as a newbie, It is just hard to know where to start and what are the short cuts. Thanks for the overviewl.

It can be overwhelming at first but just keep your head high and plugging along. After a couple months you will be rocking and rolling! :)

Is there a limit on backlinks we create each month?

Problem I have faced is I have gained first page postion but cant keep it....

about article distribution can you suggest on the numbers and sites which should be included for this?

I would focus more on quality backlinks rather than quantity. Go for diversity too. Press Release, high end social bookmarks, quality article directories, bookmarks, web 2.0's, etc...
