If you guys think managed hosting takes care of protection, viruses and malware you're sadly mistaken. If you think they'll notice when your dedi is offline and needs rebooted you better think again. Managed hosting does one thing! Gives you a number to call when shit hits the fan. If you think you can take a day off and not worry about your server being offline you're wrong. Half the time; check that; 3/4 of the time they don't have a clue your server is down until you contact them.
I've paid all the big hosts for managed servers for years. I WISH I had all that money back. I actually had a server totally hacked (root access, changed root password) because they never patched the Linux kernel when an exploit was discovered a few years ago. They never knew (two different hosts) when my servers were offline until I called them. Then every time it was oh yeah our techs were just seeing your server was offline. Um no they've been down for 5 hours according to a separate monitoring server I hired.
Managed servers are just a joke to make extra money. There is nobody watching your server until you call with a problem. They never know why an account was compromised, why your server load is crazy high with nothing running, why sites are getting malware injected and the list goes on and on.
Here is what you do. If you need a dedi then you need to learn how to secure and run it. Way to the web (configserver) has a nice service that will secure your dedi for a Benjamin. Money well spent. If you don't want to monitor and learn how to manage a dedi then don't get one. Paying managed support is just throwing money away so you can talk to a tech guy that will know how to reboot your server and give you excuses when it goes down. I now run 18 of my own dedis and while I'm still learning I can tell you all of them are more secure than any that I had when I paid for managed support. When I had managed support all my sites were getting hacked, suffering code injections and servers were being abused. Now nobody gets in my servers and any attempts I see with hourly emails.
Paying for managed support is just pissing away money. Shit send me your managed server money and I'll secure your server in a day and laugh every month when you send me another check. Get a dedi and get it secured and you don't need any of this managed BS. Managed support will never secure your server and you'll always have problems. That's how they keep you believing you need managed services. LOL
