Jeff Bezos didn't make money at all. Amazon lost money consistently until decades later. He won at become the e-commerce store for everything with the best shipping. Money followed. A fuck ton of it.
There are plenty of companies that don't make money. The founders keep creating and fine tuning the product to make it the best. Once it becomes the best, the money follows.
