P.S. I heard someone asking what exactly 'above the fold' means...
If you visit a website, how much actual content (excluding the ads, header & nav menu) can you see without scrolling the page down at all.
For example, on the BHW homepage, the content starts with the recent threads under 'Title, Username, & Date'.

In my niche too, a shitty looking site with three huge ads at the top of the page recently took up first position. Content is pretty bad as well.

they are saying this will affect 1% of global searches but so far i am seeing 100% effected

One of my sites passed a lot of badly written made for adsense sites on default themes, very pleased about that as there have been a lot of spam sites popping up targeting the same keywords as this site in the last six months, my high-effort long-term strategy has defeated their short-term spam strategy.

I don't believe this is just a layout algo or that its only affecting 1% of the sites. What Google says to the public seems to hardly be the truth of whats going on. I had two sites take a big hit, it sucks.
BTW, what themes were you all using that got affected? Trying to see if there is some kind of footprint targeting going on.

I went from #10 to #37 but I have no ads on it and all content is above the fold. So I guess I lost it but not for that reason...

I am developing my website from scratch so there is no duplicate,copy etc of my site & it is 100% custom theme, yet it is also got devalued. And my bounce rate is 34% according to the GA

Me too. I code my sites by hand, so I'm pretty sure there is no duplicate. But still, I work hard to get it #15, #12, #10 and boom...#37 since a couple of days, for a very competitive KW...My traffic dropped to 25% now...

Maybe the page layout algo wasn't the only update they ran, people are saying they experienced this as late as yesterday (the 20th), but after the 14th Jan is when I noticed a big increase in traffic across a few unrelated sites.
I think there was an update on the 14th, and something else different on the 19th/20th.
I've been doing a lot of legit social promotion on a lot of my sites, maybe that is even more of a ranking factor now?

Is it better to use custom coded themes than, say, your standard thesis 1.8? Dont really think this should matter much though
