All New Google - Page layout algorithm improvement

it seems that there are irregularities where some people's ranking with ads have stayed and some complaining of loss of SERP. I have a site with Ads above the fold and it seems OK for now (i hope i am not speaking too soon). Whereas i have another site that was on position 6 which has now been knocked down to position 20 but it has ZERO Ads. Both sites have always ranked well with quality content and in competitive niches.
This leads me to think something else maybe going on and i though it may be an idea to use this thread to ask everyone who has been hit in serps some basic questions about our sites to get a better understanding and a consensus on what may be happening for all our benefit. I'd be curious to know the following (feel free to suggest any other common and SENSIBLE question you may want to add to the list):
1. Are our backlinks from sites/ networks with spun content. e.g linKvine. vana etc.?I know for a fact that this was a very important point G was focussing on and we may still be getting hit.
2. Are we using sitewide BL's. e.g blogroll links etc?
3. Has the rate of link building been too fast? e,g xrumer/ SB/ SENuke blasts etc
I'll start with answering the above questions with my own sites:

2. 50% sitewide links
3. No
Lets use this great forum to get more knowledge by using all our sites as examples to learn from each other to see where we are going wrong. This can be regarded as a big seo test case if we all join in!

Create legitimate pages and gain legitimate shares, likes +1's retweets and real fans/followers who will stick around, no bots, no likes paid for, put in the extra work and don't pay for useless followers.
Yes, even a Thesis 1.8 theme that has the php and css tweaked will be better than one everyone else has, themes do matter, and the more unique the theme is, the better. Google does look at the site layout, so tweak your site, make it yours and make it original.
I'm not sure exactly what it was, but after the 14th was when I got the boom in traffic, so something definitely happened, since G releases the algo tweaks on a regular basis, maybe this was the first one they released after the holidays.

A couple of my sites got higher rank after this update + one site that has been MIA since august last year popped back in the top (maybe a coincidence).

I code websites with notepad since 1995. And even when I install WP or whatever else, I touch the CSS, the layout, etc...They are all uniques...

My traffic went up a lot that day, so some kind of SERPS re-shuffle must have happened

Sites with sleek, clean, original custom designs, non-intrusive ad blocks with lots of 100% handwritten content and a buzz about them in the social scene.
Sites like this seem to be ranking well for me at the moment, the extra effort in making your sites 'cool' and 'unique' is well worth it.

Not the case from what I can see. I see sites that were ranking below me are now at the top. And guess what they have 2 Large Rectangles 336x228 slapped together above the fold, so that it is impossible to see anything without scrolling down.
