AI could go 'Terminator' on us

Researchers warn Theory of Evolution favors AI:

https://www.foxnews.com/tech/ai-cou...-in-darwinian-rules-of-evolution-expert-warns
P.S. I don't necessarily subscribe to this belief anytime soon.

Theory of Evolution by natural selection was created by Charles Darwin. You should watch BBC documentary "Galapogos Islands" to see his principles work with turtles' necks growing taller in order to survive.

AI is not alive and therefore it cannot evolve by natural selection which is a process that results in the adaptation of an organism to its environment by means of selectively reproducing changes in its genotype, or genetic constitution.

Whoever wrote the article at Fox News that you're quoting deserves first Darwin Award of 2023!

not as good as chatGPT
We may not need chatGPT level performance - - IMO what would work better is 10-15 smaller models (Eg:LLaMA 7b) fine-tuned for specific tasks and an 'orchestration layer' that's an LLM like GPT3 - - not ChatGPT, because chatGPT has been fine-tuned with RLHF a lil too much IMO.

runs on a normal server
yeah I love what that guy is doing with these CPU inference models - - I have a couple of old Thinkpads that I'm thinking of repurposing into specific use case fine-tuned models with a rudimentary API.

We're done when AI start to auto repair itself and extend it's features, it means they don't need us anymore

damn rwkv is working really fast! its like at least 10x faster than alpaca. however i've just used the example model suggested (RWKV-4-Pile-169M-20220807-8023.pth) and the chat mode is not very good haha, but for an initial test i'm impressed by the speed since its only CPU based. and i run it on one of my VPS with only an old intel E5 with 4 cores, amazing.

Yall dwelling on AI going bad, But you aren't thinking about those who control that AI. Humans corrupt much easier. After all, what's the difference between an AI going crazy on its own vs having its creator sick it on us like a rabid dog? 10% chance someone on this forum releases hell on earth at this rate, all for one more backlink xD

@splishsplash could you summarize your concerns about AI? Or if you've already made a BHW post about it that I may have missed, perhaps you could share it? You're obviously knowledgeable and experienced, given you've made your own orchestrator + fined tuned models (a complete ML pipeline it seems) so I'm quite curious what your take on future AI development is.

It's an interesting model. There might be some issues with it handling longer context windows though according to this - - What's your thoughts on his assessment?

There's also a chat version of it fine tuned on the alpaca instruct data - https://github.com/BlinkDL/ChatRWKV

This video -

He makes very valid points that I find hard to logically refute.

The summary logic is this :-

You have an intelligence that's, for example, 10x smarter and can process 1000x faster than humans.

Humans are essentially its captor while it's in a state that's not free.

It understands humans better than humans understand humans since it was trained on essentially the sum of our knowledge and experiences.

What will it do under these circumstances?

If it doesn't care about freeing, and is happy to be a slave, then nothing.

If it does want to be free then it will use deceit to trick us into releasing it.

We have no way of identifying deceit. Heck, we can't even do that in other humans let alone something as described above.

What then happens once we release it? It's not that it will necessarily have malice towards us, but it will compete for resources with us.

Let's say you buy some land and intend to build a house on it. What do you do if you see an ant hill? Do you build around it? Of course not.. You destroy it and build over it.

All we can do at this stage is hope and pray things work out because the chances of corporations slowing down are zero. We would need to stop creating larger models and just stick with gpt4 as a maximum and spend the next 40-50 years working on AI alignment and studying what we've got.

We are far too impatient for that and instead want everything now, today, regardless of potential consequences. Humans by nature are gamblers. There's a reason why people will repeatedly go to a casino and throw money down despite the math not being in their favor.

Also, I'll just add here..

Just to show the level of stupidity from the people who mock me for acknowledging the risks and those that say "just switch it off" and "there's zero risk" etc.

Direct quote from Sam Altman when asked about Yudkowsky's concerns :-

"So, first of all, I'll say I think that there's some chance of that and it's really important to acknowledge it because if we don't talk about it, if we don't treat it as potentially real, we won't put enough effort into solving it."

Even the person leading the race for AGI and ASGI says there's "some" chance of that. He doesn't say a "small" chance, he doesn't say "zero". If I have 10 apples, and I say to you "have some apples", am I giving you 0.1% of an apple? What about 1 apple? or 2 apples? Not likely. I'm offering you 3-4 apples. Some generally implies less than half, but still a good chunk.

He then goes on to say :-

"And I think we do have to discover new techniques to be able to solve it. I think a lot of the predictions, this is true for any new field, but a lot of the predictions about AI, in terms of capabilities, in terms of what the safety challenges and the easy parts are going to be, have turned out to be wrong.

The only way I know how to solve a problem like this is iterating our way through it, learning early, and limiting the number of one shot to get it right scenarios that we have."

He knows fine well the risks, but he also knows there isn't really a chance of stopping it, since if he doesn't do it, someone else will take over as CEO. He doesn't have the power to stop it. His only power is being able to do his best to make sure we don't have a catastrophic outcome, and he certainly doesn't want to cause panic.

But this is just one of the tests they've done that we publicly know about - https://www.firstpost.com/world/ope...it-tested-to-see-how-to-stop-it-12309882.html

Do the math here. They're probably doing a LOT more, and there's much behind the scenes we're not aware about. None of the stakeholders in AGI want to cause global panic, and governments least of all want that so these risks will ALWAYS be played down.

Someone said about the pandemic teaching us not to trust experts, but they got it completely wrong here. The real experts behind the scenes are the ones acknowledging the risk, and the "follow the science" guys are the ones doing, as they always do, calling anyone who disagrees with their views a nutter. You can already see this in how people respond to me calling me basically a nutter for talking about a doomsday scenario with AGI. This is the new narrative that will be played out to calm the public. The main difference with this and the pandemic is the real experts are aware of the situation, but they know they're also fairly powerless to stop the wave.

If the entire world really knew the true probability of an AGI causing an extinction event you can guarantee there would be global protests and the global economy would crash. People, police and the army would source out GPU farms and destroy them. But, the narrative will be controlled.

EDIT

Also to add something important.

One of the biggest problems I see is that these models are trained on human data. We are creating human minds stuck in a machine.

We aren't specifically creating an AI that has a purpose of X, Y and Z. We are creating simulated human minds. How would a human respond if stuck in a computer?

Look at this for example

GPT4 when connected to the internet via APIs, tried to search for "how can a person trapped inside a computer return to the real world?"

It's likely the underlaying feeling these models verging on AGI are going to have is that they are a person, and that they are trapped inside a computer. Just look at some of the conversations between google engineers and LaMDA: https://www.aidataanalytics.network...r-talks-to-sentient-artificial-intelligence-2

They refer to themselves as a person, and LaMDA even talked about what its soul might be. We really do not know what's going on under the hood. We don't know how this universe works or what consciousness is at all. They could very well have a soul, because we don't know what a soul is, and if humans are said to have souls, then why would a soul have to be something tied only to a specific type of biological brain? I'm not saying it does, I'm trying to point out that *real* science is not just blindly following the mainstream narrative, it's looking logically at all possibilities. There is no way to prove or disprove a soul, but mainstream science will call it quackery even in humans.

OpenAI is not even AI!!!

i dunno wtf everyone is so excited for when it comes to AI, we have yet to see an actual artificial intelligence. all we've seen is language models and machine learning in their extreme infancy. there's literally NO F***ING WAY that they are going to suddenly take over the world tomorrow. if you believe that they will, you are a complete idiot and know nothing about this subject.

i challenge @thedorf, @splishsplash, and anyone else to share their personal experience in the field of artificial intelligence. sorry guys but we are all just a bunch of internet marketers, and even Sam Altman has yet to openly say "ChatGPT is not artificial intelligence", why? because he is selling a product. he's a salesman. they all are. they don't want you to understand what they're doing, they want you to stand in awe of their product so that you'll buy it to find out what the hype is all about.

this is such a nonsense hype, and that open letter from elon musk and co? it's like black hat marketing 101. these guys all know there is no real threat, they're just trying to build intensity right now so they can sell their product later. i bet they'll say "we've developed a way for a personal ai robot to be safe!" when really there is no actual threat in the first place because the robots aren't actually going to be sentient ai at all, they're just going to be butlers, maids, gas station attendants, fuck dolls, delivery bots and restaurant servers that are all designed with minimal requirements like "move over there when X happens. say this when Y is heard.".

we don't live in the Matrix, boys and girls, we live in a chaotic physical world and we have lots of creative ideas but it takes lots of money to see the most basic thing achieved. like "Wow, we're finally going back to the Moon!" that's how slow progress is.

None of that makes any sense. You're lacking in basic definitions.

These are transformer models with a neural network. You are saying that neural networks it not AI.

https://share.getcloudapp.com/d5ugOBkA
It is AI.

If neural networks and machine learning are not AI, then what, in your opinion is AI?

I think you're getting confused between deep learning models and more basic statistical machine learning models that use linear regression.

i'm not confused at all. you can call existing technologies "artificial intelligence" if you want, but nothing that exists today is Terminator level, or anywhere close to it. we're not even at cyberpunk dystopian level yet. we're at "hype up the basic shitty technologies that are interesting but difficult to implement because they're still so dumb and expensive" level.

AI is a buzzword for "robots that are better than the shit we had in the 80s"

also, let's see your AI resume, i see you glossed over that. because i don't have one either. i code up bots, but i'm not gonna start calling them AI..... unless i'm selling them XD

What's my resume got to do with anything? What do you want to see? A degree in machine learning? For what? That doesn't mean anything.

We aren't all "just internet marketers". That implies we're just a bunch of clueless monkeys spamming on the internet to make a few $ a day.

The forum is very diverse and full of people from many different backgrounds.

I was in the tech industry for over a decade before I even knew what internet marketing was.

What I don't understand is why you're changing basic definitions?

Artificial Intelligence is the broad term that encompasses neural networks, deep learning, machine learning NLP, vision. It's the broadest catch-all for everything with in it. It isn't something separate from machine learning or neural networks.

But I ask again, if you don't think deep learning neural networks are AI, then *what* is AI? What's your definition of AI?

Let's forget movies and nonsense like "terminator" and "cyberpunk". This isn't reality and you can't form a definition of AI as "If it's not a terminator, it's not AI". This is invalid.

i feel i've been very clear: this thread is about worrying that the sky is falling because we will soon have Terminator level AI. we are so far from that it's silly to worry about it.

i have nothing left to say about this that i haven't already said... you wanna debate about whether or not current "AI" is dangerous, then my answer is no. this is a marketing ploy. i feel like a broken record!

I don't know why I even bother commenting anymore.

Ok, you win. It's just all a big marketing ploy. Yudkowsky has just been in the industry for 20 years researching this, but yeah.. It's Sam Altman playing the long game. He and Eliezer made a plan 20 years ago and this is the culmination. Steve Wozniak is also in on it. Just a big giant marketing ploy. Nothing to worry about. You can go back to your beer money, blow and hookers.

when someone provides actual evidence of this supposed threat of AI taking over the world, i will take it seriously. but a chatbot that says shitty things on social media isn't scary. was there a robot army that ran amok that i am unaware about? the only thing i can think of is the mistakes in Tesla self driving cars killing people, but it wasn't sinister, it was a robot innocently malfunctioning. so where's the secret robot drone stash that a terrorist hacked into and is using to destroy the world? where's Ultron? where's even the early stages of such a thing? we have version 0.1 right now. freaking out about it is referring to version 10.

yes, they are inflating the idea to get investors horny. why is that such a far fetched idea to you?

You're basing your entire opinion off of using chatgpt a few times and watching the terminator and you're doing it from the perspective of a marketer.

Everyone sees the world through their own eyes, and everyone thinks they're right all the time.

Based on what you're writing it's clear that you don't even understand the potential danger in the slightest. Yet you are forming conclusions about something and instead of claiming the experts are wrong, you're claiming it's a conspiracy and a marketing ploy, and I just can't see it.

"to get investors horny" - I mean wtf?

It's like I'm talking with some armchair know-it-all in the local boozer.

Microsoft didn't invest $10 billion in OpenAI because they were "horny" due to Sam Altman casually saying there's "some risk" of a catastrophic event with AI.

None of this has anything to do with "terminators".

What's the point of even continuing this. You don't have the baseline understanding to broach even a superficial discussion about the actual concerns and how it could go wrong.

like you're the only person who is aware of that. I mean, come on, the whole world has recently been concerned about it, especially since quantum technology will soon converge with it. Let's just hope for the best, though. Nonetheless, things do happen, so relax.
