Hey all,

Our website has been hit hard by the HCU update in December, and we've been trying to fix it by creating better content - but there's a bit of a concern on the content writer relying on AI quite heavily, which could be one of the reasons we've been penalised.

Is there any tools that anyone is aware of that can scan through a website and check for AI reliably? I've seen originality.ai but 100 words per credit we would rinse through rather quickly with our site...

there are other cheaper checkers but do you trust that it is not giving false postives/false negatives? if it was written by ai good chance its being picked up as ai

i don't think AI content really matters, as long it looks good quality to the eyes and has enough info regarding the main keyword you should be fine, the main problem is with link building these days, people are just focusing on the content itself and forget about internal linking and overall link building

I'm fine using it if it's good, the originality.ai one that is.

I'm unsure whether it does full site scans, and it's a big investment to check the whole site through it.

Whilst I agree, we've been hit by the content update - not links, and we've been consistently building decent links for a while now.

I also think it does matter, I think Google can detect it pretty easily if I can tell by reading it, and the content generated from AI is pretty poor from a user perspective - poor because it's not unique, it's just rehashed. I don't think AI is bad, I use it for research when I write - but I never copy and use the actual content.

Fire them and hire a real writer who puts care and actual thought into their craft.

At the moment, it's just a concern - that's why I want to see if there's a tool out there.

I'm not sure if you can rely 100% on AI detectors, not sure if it's possible to somehow detect the content "technically". Plus, AI content is not a big thing, try to find if you or your team anyhow tried to "manipulate" the algo, ie.

Also, do you have a manual penalty showing up in your GSC?

No, not a manual penalty, just a huge decline that correlates with the 16th December update exactly.

I wouldn’t overreact, with these things the best thing you can do is make small changes and not overhaul.
The biggest problem is over-correcting when it comes to algorithm updates.

The biggest thing is, you should be having someone manually add + polish up/add more personality to posts to distinguish. Just a good practice in general no matter how good AI gets.

If they detect it as AI, they attribute it to AI.

AI often fails at being factually correct and content has high perplexity score.

AI + human touch works well.

@Mister Ghost might have a tip of two for you regarding AI content.

Also, there was no HCU update in December, only Core and Spam. It's important to identify these correctly, it can help with fixing the issues.

If there is no manual penalty, I wouldn't panic. I had a client who came for a recovery consultation - they had no manual penalty as well, but claiming they are penalized. We just improved their existing content and so far whenever I look at GSC of that website seems like they are getting pretty decent traffic.

I agree with @tiiberius, I can't remember a HCU on December as well.

@tiiberius @BlackHatSaint0

It was the core update as you rightly mention, but this core update incorporated and was mainly based on content / HCU - https://www.seroundtable.com/google-december-2024-core-update-volatility-38581.html

And taking a step back, it makes sense. I think a lot of our content had been focused on quickly rewriting & trying to pump out as many articles as possible, specifically for local pages as an example. Even our core pages just seem rehashed versions of each other, and other search results. Our focus since then has been to incorporate our own unique statistics, and actually improve these significantly from a human perspective, whilst also killing anything we deem to be poor quality (and never really generated anything).

Our ranking drop correlated heavily with this, we've tanked to the point we're really at the base line of rankings now. From roughly 600-700 visits a day, to 100 on a good day.

you can use AI but as I always say if you ask for something AI will always give you the same result and most of the times is not because sites or google is detecting AI content is because is duplicate content you are not the only one with that idea and if you do not change or put some extra work editing and chaging the content.

That's the problem with content writers this day, they become lazy to even structure contents or write without AI assistance.

A trick that can work is.... Let's say you need at least 600 word per article!

Instruct your writer to write 300 word per article, then ask another writer to optimize the article to 600 word.

If you need further help on how this trick could work, let me know.

While AI can assist in content creation, it’s crucial to have a human editor refine and personalize the content. This is especially important for Google’s E-A-T (Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) guidelines. Adding personal experiences, case studies, or unique insights can elevate the content’s quality.

Combining AI-generated text with original user-generated content, case studies, or expert contributions can help your content stand out and appear more authentic to both Google and your readers.

Gents - thank you for the input, but I understand all this.

My question was whether people knew of or had used AI content detectors and could recommend any?

Originaliti ai is the best tool on the market in my opinion :)

You can try Originality ai or Quillbot ai detectors. Also, most of the ai detector tools are not accurate, and sometimes they show handwritten articles as ai generated. If the articles are relevant, highly readable, and structured well with good enough information, it won't be an issue, I think. If needed, you hire a new native writer or a team to optimize all the articles.
