Ahrefs vs Google Keyword Planner,

I've got a buddy in work here that's always buying access for like $3 to Ahrefs for scrapes and reports...

Why? Would it not be better to get the data from the horses mouth?
Are there things Ahrefs can do that GKP can't? I'll definitely ChatGPT this but just want to hear some non-artificial reasoning.

Maybe they want keywords as related to specific websites. Keywords these sites are ranking for.
This is what I think.

But you can target a location and search by website/webpage using Google Keyword Planner mate.

Keyword difficulty is something Ahrefs provides, would competition not explain that?

Backlink analysis, I've got very few uses for this at this stage in my career... I feel if we're targeting a search term, then best check the first two pages manually... When I need a broader view, I'm sure Ahrefs is needed here.

Ahrefs provides data on ads... Content gaps is another big thing I believe.

Edit: Google Keyword Planner for general traffic and search terms, Screaming Frog for on-site reporting, Ahrefs for competitive analysis.

well GKP more accurate while ahrefs have a lot of features, you can choose one or just pay and use both of them

Like most SEO tools ahrefs provides ready to use data and has a massive well maintained database.

They hold edge over most tools in terms of accuracy and prediction with their analysis tools and historical database.

So, it saves time the and makes the job easier.

There are multiple tools to prepare a full seo strategy not just limited to keywords and niche.

Ahrefs has the best backlinks tool and its keyword difficulty score is mostly very near to accurate.

Also the filtering and comparison tools give it an edge.

In case of GKP it's limited to just keywords data.

One more thing most IMers have a lazy lifestyle and are ready to look for 1 click solutions.

Personally I would say tools like Ahrefs aren't a necessity if you're not a agency with lots of clients and projects.

Most past of the SEO planning can be done for free using Google and free tools.

Appreciate it folks, I've determined I've got no real use for Ahrefs yet.

Some great insights here, hopefully someone finds this thread in the future.

Even when maintaining SEO projects for multiple clients and nichees - AHREFs is the way to go. None the less, there are a lot of situations where just GKP is enough for the job. Different tools for different uses.

Ahrefs offers way more and its easy to grab more keywords and see competitors in plain sight
 
You have free ahrefs webmaster you can youse, just upload an ahrefs file to your server, and you get loads of the normal features.
 
Hi, Keyword planner gives you approximate value and ahrefs gives you specific numbers.

Thanks for this update. I never knew that's a thing. Well, now I have been searching their website for the free tool or ahrefs file to upload on my website but I couldn't find it yet. Can you share the link or file and/or a guide to do that?
 
Both Ahrefs and Google's Keyword Planner are getting their info from Google's API. The difference between them in their refresh rate and their keyword expanding algo, which are very different.
In my tests, though SEMRush won, with Keywordtool io as a close second.

No tool predicts CPC these days properly because automated bidding strategies made the CPC vary drastically.
Most of the work is on CRO and QS anyways.

Just search on Google for Ahref Toolkit for Webmasters
 
I think Ahref have some edge over gkp in terms of accuracy and prediction.

Yes go to https://app.ahrefs.com/dashboard and then create a project after you've setup your account I think. Then you can inside the add project section, download the file (make sure you tick make unique) and then upload it via FTP to your servers website root, and then that's it, it will all magically show in a 1 page dashboard, and you can add as many as you want i think, and get all your backlinks and keyword data
 
GKP is mainly for PPC and gives keyword volume estimates, but Ahrefs gives a lot more insight on backlinks, competitor analysis, keyword difficulty, etc.
