I just stumbled on this a few minutes ago. Ahrefs is about to launch their own webmaster tools called Ahrefs Webmaster Tools.

This will have the option of connecting your Google search console to improve reporting.

According to the article below, it is free.

This will affect PBN sellers who blocked Ahrefs crawlers because this time they can get the data from your customer's Search Console.

Will you join in?

Bing has similar feature of connecting with g console so that they can save on crawl budget :p
So they can't fund their own search engine, I won't be surprised if the anti-google guys(duckduckgo) starts doing the same thing.

But the situation with ahrefs is a lot different from one search engine trying to borrow data from another.

Dunno... I think Ahrefs to a degree has gotten worse if I was to screen shot a metric for my site for a top 10 keyword on the face of it. Based on the data they report it makes no sense me being there...

I thought before years ago you could connect to WMT maybe that was another platform?

Either way all that to one side. If it improves some data great.. ill let my competitors connect first to help me out rather than the other way around ;)

Exactly, I would leave them to continue guessing what the actual stats are for my site.

So basically they are doing what UberSuggests does and taking all your GSC data to feed into their algo. No wonder they are making it free, they want as many suckers as possible to give away their data for free.

The real question is: How many PBNs is Ahrefs going to find now when they are all clearly listed in people's GSC? Will they not crawl them as per the robots.txt file or add them to their database anyway?

I use ahrefs to keep an eye on other websites, not the ones I look after, so the benefits of ahrefs knowing slightly more about websites I already know like the back of my hand are not great.

On the other hand, ahrefs gets far more information about weaknesses in its crawler, and how Google decides what to show in search console.

I'm not sure that's a particularly good trade.

It'll be interesting to see what take-up is like.

As for identifying PBNs - ahrefs can already identify websites that block their crawler. It is only by linking their tool to your GSC account that they'll see links to you that they can't crawl.

There are legitimate reasons why you wouldn't bots crawling your website and why you might block them. So while blocking is common for a site on a PBN, blocking doesn't mean for sure that a site is part of a PBN.

GSC already has the data on what page(from what site/PBN) is linking to what page(your site)

So, they don't need to crawl the sites, they'll just add the data anyway.

I just connected my websites and it contains a lot of useful data, without the need of an Ahrefs subscription.

You're trading your site's data for a free Ahrefs subscription. Not a bad trade but I wouldn't do that.

Why not? What do you have to lose by connecting your site to them?

All your PBNs, backlinks that don't show in Ahrefs that competitors will be able to see and copy, accurate clicks and impressions for every search term your site ranks for... you're basically handing everything about your site over to your competitors for free lol.

Good point. Just disconnected all my sites :p

Exactly my thought the very moment I saw the would need me to connect my GSC.
No way.

It'll be interesting to see how many "gurus" will use it... will make competitor analysis easier.
Definitely not giving them all the data. With google, you have nothing to lose as google already knows all the info you see in gsc but ahref... no, thanks.

PS: just read the article and it's pathetic, sounds like it's written by a 5 year old child.
